Storm hits Northwest SEATTLE (UPI) A fierce Pacific storm with winds up to 70 knots off the coast raked western Washington Tuesday, causing numerous power outages, toppled trees, broken windows and the death of a Tacoma woman. Coast Guardsmen struggled to tow a disabled fishing vessel to safety.

Seattle City Light and Puget Sound Power Light Co. reported a record number of calls about power outages in one of the worst storms to hit the state in 15 years. In Tacoma, Lisa McKell, who would have been 21 Nov. 8, died of head injuries suffered in a wind-caused accident on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. She was injured when a canopy flew off a pickup truck and smashed into her car.

The Coast Guard reported most fishing vessels safe in port. First major snows hit ski slopes By Unfed The season's first major snowfall brought joy to Colorado ski resort operators Tuesday and a "Blue Norther" swept down through Texas. Torrential rains, a tornado, hail and dust also assailed the southern Plains as the first-of-November storm routed record-breaking warmth. Five inches of snow fell in the foothills west of Denver and up to six inches was reported on the slopes at Aspen, a major ski resort The Vail ski area received fourinches atop eight that had accumulated earlier. "It looks good, really good," a ski spokesman at Aspen said.

"It was the first major snowfall of the season for us." "This is really encouraging," a spokesman for the Vail area said. "Maybe the Western drought has come to its conclusion." Several major highways and mountain passes were snowpacked, including the Interstate 70 approaches to the Eisenhower Tunnel under the Continental Divide. The snow began on Halloween, sharply cutting the number of trick-or-treaters on the streets in the Denver metropolitan area Monday night. Temperatures dropped below freezing throughout Colorado and skidded to 11 above, the nation's morning low, at Gunnison, Colo. Snowfall extended eastward into Kansas and southward into New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle.

The wind-driven storm, which Texans called a "Blue Norther," hiked clouds of red dust across Lubbock and sent the mercury tumbling from Monday's record 90-degree high at Dallas.
