I Thursday. September 29.1977 Van Nuys, Calif. Las Vegas ventures VALLEY NEWS Sections Page9 Ice Fantasy' more than a variety show on ice By VIC FIELD Compared to the Hacienda's previous offering of "Spice on its new production, "Ice is a definite improvement Gone are most of the old routines, costumes and variety artists Retained were the ice concept, the comic skater "Dr. Stranglelegs," and the variety format, but everything else is a refreshing new spectacular Highlighting the show are the aesthetic skaters led by Billy Chapel, who cuts an impressive image as he glides on stage performing feats which elicit "oohs and aahs A "Wizardry On Ice" number is also breathtaking starring adept skaters Nancy Lee Parker, Susan Lease and Richard Reid Despite the over-all ice theme, the skating is but icing on a cake that also includes an effectively entertaining variety show Comics, jugglers, singers and clowns all contribute the enjoyable evening, at a modest tab "Ice Fantasy" is offered on an indefinite basis at the Hacienda Vegas Bits: The Tropicana Hotel's Fountain Theatre has been the site of repeated 0 performances by "Alan-A Tribute to Elvis The immensely popular attraction has been held over seven weeks to accomodate Stage in review the crowds Alan and his hip-swivel- mg "Elvis" repertoire, which includes all--facets of the legend 70s) has become one of the hottest attractions in town, and will tour the and then other countries Alan is so popular that his agents have booked the show in foreign countries which Elvis himself never played The Circus Maximus Room of Caesar's Palace opens tonight with the most popular and consistent attraction in its star roster, Andy Williams Since first opening the room 1956, the smooth singer has compiled 17 gold records, three Emmys, and with tonight's opening, 18 appearances at the Circus Maximus Room. This time around "Mr Smooth" is complemented with the sweet harmonies of the Lennon Sisters, a bill that constitutes the best elements of music The Sahara's Congo Room deviates from its usual format of two-star attractions tonight as Charo, the Keane Brothers and comic Rip Taylor open a two-week stay Charo, as usual, features her Spanish act complete with "Los Gitanos de Espana" dance troupe The surprise this line-up is the Keane Brothers, a sibling duo whose Dissimilar plays are entertaining ByRICKTALCOVE Question Can you do a production obvious bad taste and still get away with it' Answer Certainly, if you're producer Ron Sossi and your production is "An Evening of Dirty Religious Plays" at the Odyssey Theater Ensemble in West Los Angeles The evening consists of Uvo quite dissimilar plays--Peter Barnes' "Noonday Demons" and Robert Coover's "A Theological Position" Both scripts poke fun at basic religious beliefs, yet director Sossi is so comically in touch with his material, it's hard to get of fended--unless you're particularly sensitive.

Barnes, who wrote Peter O'Toole's religious crackpot film "The Ruling Class," has a field day with "Noonday Demons." Set in an Egptian cave the year 392 A.D, it presents us with two down-m-the-mud saints fighting over their religious convictions Particularly outstanding is Garret Pierson, who has an incredible monologue during the first part of the play, as he pits saint against conscience Gary Guidmger is also quite good as Pierson's rival and the two resort to a battle that is both intellectual and physical its conflicting attitudes However, the play remains a delight and is never obscured by either acting or staging--a feat not always accomplished by the Odyssey in the past On a more traditional level, Coover's "Theological Position" finds Sossi as the priest who must prove to dim-wit couple Stephen Bassord Hunter and Beth Hogan that their recent conception was anything but immaculate Performances--including Lucy Avery Brooke--are fine and the play is a fitting companion piece to the earlier Barnes religious menagerie. Rafigh Ghorbanzadeh's sets are inventive to their plays It's off-beat theater with an additional twist, and recommended GENERAL CINEMA ALL CJNEM AS-E VERY DAY I Sl.SO'Tl!. 2.30 P.M.
