Thursday, August 18,1977 Van Nuys, Calif. VALLEY NEWS Sections Stage In review A Woody Allen montage ByRICKTALCOVE Since the audience is usually the final judge of a production's success, it should be noted immediately that "An Evening by Woody Allen" has been a sellout some nights at the Century City Playhouse. However, this Burbage Theater Ensemble effort seems extremely collegiate in both viewpoint and proficiency. On the other hand, the material itself is the kind that would naturally attract a younger performer. This "Evening" consists of Allen's one-act play "God" and material from his two books, "Without Feathers" and "Getting Even." Neither the play nor the material is up to Allen's films, but for the thor- ough Allen-addict, they are there to be seen.

"God," which is also being staged by the Phoenix Rising in North Hollywood, is an undergraduate prank of a play that not even Allen's name can provide sufficient excuse for. It's all obvious satire, without genuine bite or imagination beyond the printed page. Reading it is good enough; the staging of it only belabors the obvious. The Burbage doesn't identify its members individually in their program, but the collective work of Laurie Braude, Tabi Cooper, Deborah Devine, Toni Lamond, James Leedom, Lawrence Parks, Stan Roth, Christian Seaborn, and Kurt Smildsin is good enough for a single salute. And although it lacks some of the extraordinary features of similar bare revues in Las Vegas, the 70-minute show is enjoyable.

Highlights of the fast-paced production include a surprise ending to comic ventriloquist Sammy King's act and a segment titled "Ease on Down the Road," which features munchkins with bulging "eyes" the eyes being what most of the 14 female dancers bare throughout the show. The production's lead singer is French Canadian Michel Dary. His delivery is forceful, but it seemed off the mark on several numbers. On the other hand, lead dancers Shannon Johnston and Bryant McGiveron, also the choreographer, do a more-than-adequate job. And their performance in the "Sultry Day in Haiti" act is excellent.

Another standout in this segment is dancer Lorelei Lee. The show also includes Ernest Montago, a talented juggler from Europe. Produced by Barry Ashton and Wolf Kochmann, "Paris Scandale" has memorable costumes and sets. However, the sound is too loud, even for the dialogue segments. The show has been extended to Oct.

31, the altruistic comic will be operating at full steam as he appears, coordinates and arranges the largest collection of Vegas pei- formers ever organized for a benefit. Lewis' comedic antics in the Sahara's Congo Room are spiced by the energetic talents of singer Abbe Lane. The Hacienda Hotel has kept a cool check on entertainment by offering the novel "Spice on Ice," nude ice-skating revue. Seasons of lovely skaters doing the tired routine, and the sophistication of other ice shows eventually gave it an "old hat" mystique, despite the un-costumed skaters. Now, the Hacienda brass is phasing out "Spice on Ice" at the end of this month and replacing it with an all-new ice spectacular, "Ice Fantasy." The new production boasts top-flight producers, designers and choreographers, and will star songstress Denise Clemente and comic Pepper Davis.

'Paris Scandale" is a success on stage in Lake Tahoe. The Hacienda hopes to make its "flesh for flash" switch by September.
