Section 4 VALLEY NEWS Van Nuys, Friday, July 22,1977 i -v Focus on GOLF Stacy leading Women's Open Joe Buttitta Amateurs turn out in bunches A record turnout of 1,057 golfers turned out this week for the 78th edition of the Southern California Golf Association's amateur championship and when qualifying was over, 64 stalwarts had made the grade in the championship division. These are guys' with handicaps from 0-4. That field of 64 players (including defending champion Tony Sills who is exempt) who qualified Monday and Tuesday, will be reduced to 32 following today's 36 holes in La Jolla Country Club. Those select players will then go 18 holes tomorrow and Sunday at La Jolla to determine the 72-hole champion. Favorites for the tournament include two-time NCAA champion Scott Simpson, Lee Davis, 1975 champ from Los Angeles CC; Ted Richards, the aged but still deft two-time SCGA champion and a 16-time Bel-Air club champ, Doug Clarke, 1976 Trans-Miss champion, Curtis Worley, 1974 CGA champion, Ted Lyford, runner-up in this year's CGA championship, Brett Mullin, former USGA junior titlist, Bud Bradley, six-time Riviera club champ and a crack stockbroker to boot, Joe Simpson, last year's runner-up (see, we remember who finished and Gerry Simoni, third in 1976 (we even remembered him).

Paul Carter, the one-time Cal State Northridge ace from Las Posas, Ron Commans of Westlake Village, and Gary Backlund from Calabasas CC are some of the Valley's top qualifiers. HUMOR From Larry Wilde's Official Golfer's Joke Book: "A boy who can smile when everything goes wrong seldom keeps his job as a caddy." LAKE LINDEKO NEWS He's been nothing short of fantastic on the course. Jim Short collected his fifth hole-in-one the other day on that little laid- back layout while playing with KGIL's Jim Howard. And that's handicap in any golfer's book 1 And this kid needs a saliva test. Thirteen-year-old Les Lade, whose parents belong to Lake Lindero CC, entered a three-day medal competition at Westlake Village and by 30 FRANK BEARD was talking about the serious approach of the new breed of golfers on the pro tour these days.

Said the clean-shaven Beard "In the old days we had some guys who liked fun at night Now the guys all stay in their motel rooms doing push-ups." Yes, Frank, but with HUMOR From the Official Golfer's Joke Book: "Your husband seems to be hitting the ball better with that new stance "Old stance. New husband." SEPULVEDA JUNIORS Robert Sherick, 17, of Van Nuys captured the Sepulveda Junior Golf championship with a 54-hole total of 77-79-74--230. Sherick attends UCLA and won the 1976 title as well. Keith Fisher of Sepulveda was second at 242, while Chatsworth's Doug Harper scored 246 for third. Both are 14.

CAREER HOURS Bob Roose of North Hol- lywod had an ace at Hansen Dam's seventh hole, Van Nuys Don Melin at Hansen Dam's 18th with a driver, Jonathan Murro of Glendale after 33 years at Harding's 15th, Glen Conly of Woodland Hills at Balboa's 13th. Charles Pruzansky of Woodland Hills at Woodley's seventh hole, and Granada Hills' Don Williams at Balboa's 305-yard par four llth with a big driver. Women's Open golf championship over the tough Hazeltine course. Stacy, of Savannah, playing in her eighth open, shot even-par 36 on the first nine and then got two under with 12 and 20-foot birdie putts on the 11 th and 13th to finish with a 36-34--70. "It's nice to be the first day leader," Stacy grinned in the clubhouse, "But I know I'll be playing my butt off the next-three days." Stacy had a two-stroke lead over Jane Blalock, Amy Alcott, Jan Stephenson and Joyce Kazmierski, who shot even-par 72, in the run for the $11,000 first prize. Kazmierski, a 10-year pro, was two under par with a chance of tying for the lead until the 16th hole Ploy Better Golf-with JACK NICKLAUS where she shot back and forth over the green for a double bogey. Alcott said she had a "very consistent, solid day of golf, and I hope I didn't use my whole bag of tricks on the first day." Nancy Lopez, playing in her first tournament as a pro, and Sandra Post, were tied at 73.

Defending champion Joanne Garner, trying for her third Open championship and all-time money winner Kathy Whitworth, who like the veteran Sam Snead never has won an Open, were two over par at 74. Tied with them were 1975 winner Sandra Palmer, Debbie Austin and Peggy Conley. Stacy, who began golfing at the age of 11, turned pro three years ago and won her first tournament in April--the Lady Tara at Atlanta. "Now I have the confidence," she said. "I know I'm capable of winning.

"This is a tough course, rolling and tight, and I think it's great," she said. "It's beautiful. I like a tough course because it makes me think. Sometimes I get a little lazy on the course and need a gun to my head." Kazmierski fired three birdies against one bogey -yesterday for a 2-under-par 34 and played even par on the back nine until the par-316th. "I played the 16th like a par she said.

"I was going for the pin and overshot." Then she went for broke again, overshot and wound up with a double bogey five. "I guess I got a little anxious," she said. Blalock, a nine-year pro, said that although she is two strokes back, she is hitting the ball well and "patience is a virtue." Stephenson said she "tended to be too agressive" in going for the pin.
