Although losers continued to outnumber gainers they did so only by a slight margin. The spread between the two was about 60. 1 Plan Ch. 8 Hearing The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has designated for comparative hearing the application for license renewal of WQAD-TV, Moline, with the application of Community Telecasting Corp. for a construction permit to operate on Channel 8.

The Moline Television Corp. application, FCC records show, was originally set for hearing in 1958. The company was awarded a permit after a comparative hearing by FCC decision in 1962. The station went on the air in 1963. The hearing now designated by the commission has three issues: 1.

Whether WQAD-TV failed to carry out the representations made in the 1958-62 proceedings concerning programming and participation in the operation by the owners. 2. If in 1967, Moline Television Corp. required additional financing, the amount required and from what sources as it sought to assign its channel to another corporation. 3.

Whether there was an attempt by Moline Television to traffic in licenses and all facts surrounding efforts to assign the station to Universal Communications Detroit. The request involving Universal Communications, a subsidiary of the Detroit Evening News was dismissed at the request of Moline Television last October. Arthur M. Swift, executive vice-president and general manager of Moline Television, said, "The latest comparative hearing is a normal course of action by the commission." He had no further comment. A pre-hearing conference date will be set within the next week or 10 days at which time a hearing date will be set.

In 1967 at the time of the proposed transfer of license, Community Telecasting Corp. opposed the move in a brief to the FCC. Officers of the Illinois company at the time were Mark Wodlinger, Kansas City, general manager of Channel 9, KMBC-TV, Kansas City; Edward Priester, Davenport and Carl A. Waldmann, Rock Island. Wodlinger subsequently withdrew from the group.

Broker Cites Record Year The international investment firm of Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner Smith Inc. today reported record results for 1967. Walter J. Middle-, camp manager of the firm's local office located at 210 E. 3rd Davenport, announced operating income rose 29 per cent to $369,443,000 while net income after all charges rose 27 per cent to $54,558,000.

Total assets reached a new record of $1,977 billion while capital funds increased to $198,801,000. These figures reflect the unprecedented activity in Wall Street, Middlecamp said. Last year Merrill Lynch handled $19.2 billion of stock transactions on the New York Stock Exchange and $90.7 billion of Government securities in the over-the-counter market. Middlecamp said "to a greater extent than ever before our quarter-century diversification program paid off in 1967." The firm has 12,000 employes who work in 170 offices including 20 outside the continental U.S. The firm now has 760 stockholders almost all of whom are active workers.

Within the next few weeks another 125 employe-shareholders will be elected. In their opening letter to 914,000 individual, corporate and institutional accounts, George J. Leness, chairman of the board, and James E. Thomson, president, are optimistic over the near-term business outlook.
