8tction3 VALLEY NEWS Van Nuys, Calif TuMday. Junt 14,1977 End of an era Helen Hayes, left, shares a poignant moment with Pamela Lewis and Dennis Michaels in S. N. Behrman's "End of Summer," a sophisticated comedy of manners about the impending end of the idle rich in 1936. The production opens a series of 10 American plays on the Public Broadcasting Service's "Great Performances." It airs tomorrow at 9 p.m.

on KCET, Channel 28. TV takes Sharon Michaels and Alice Clift doing Foley CHARLES PARKER Last month, Sharon Michaels introduced us to a highly skilled art few persons in the film business are aware exists: Doing Foley. Sharon, wife of actor Eric Mason, is a professional dancer. But her main occupation currently is dubbing footsteps onto a sound track at Columbia Pictures. When the sound of footsteps must be added to a sound track (as explained here earlier) because they were lost in the original recording or the director has decided to replace the dialogue--Sharon and her partner, Alice Clift, go into a studio with a floor of many surfaces carpet, wood, cement sand, etc.

The women watch a silent scene on a screen before them and record the actors' footsteps, matching their pace, impact and eccentricities. This, named for the director who began the practice, is called "doing Foley." Sharon has walked in the footsteps of some of the most famous persons in Hollywood, and has observed things about them few of us would ever notice. For example: "One actor who walks strangely is Ricardo Mental- ban," said Sharon. "He has a little gimp. You don't notice these things until you start to imitate someone He sort of favors his left foot.

He doesn't have an even stride." (Montalban was thrown from a horse while filming "Across the Wide Missouri" in 1S49, leaving him with partial paralysis in one leg.) "John Wayne has a peculiar walk," Sharon continued. "He sort of pulls up when he walks. But his footsteps don't sound different. Some people walk heavier than others, regardless of their weight. Roddy McDowall, for example, walks lightly.

"Then we have what we call Nervous Nellies, people who fidget like E.J. Peaker. They're always Human rights on documentary NBC News will present a major special television program on human rights tonight, 10 to 11, the eve of the 35-nation conference on human rights to be held in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. The "NBC Reports" documentary is being filmed mainly in Europe but also in the United States. Canada and Israel.

Gordon Manning, executive producer, special broadcasts, NBC News, is executive producer. NBC News correspondents Garrick Utley and John Dancy. the principal reporters, will anchor the program in Belgrade. In addition to private film NBC News has obtained from disident sources, the program will include reports from inside the Soviet Union, Poland and Yugoslavia. Refugees be heard from in camps in Italy, at a receiving camp Austria.and afterarrjval in the United Stales.

The purpose of the Belgrade conference is to review how well the 35 nations participating have put into effect the provisions of the Helsinki Agreement on European Security and Cooperation that thevaH signed Aug 1.1975. In part the Helsinki documents pledged all signers including the Soviet bloc--to a respect for "human rights fundamental freedoms and the freer movement" of both peopleand ideas. President Carter has made human rights a cornerstone of American foreign policy. "It is important journalistically." executive producer Manning said, "for NBC News to report and analyze the controversial issue of human rights now being vigorously debated between the United States and the Soviet Union. "Human rights 15 one of the principal topics of concern and misunderstanding between our two countries, and the Mgrade meeting is hkdy lo produce some lively debates at the diplomatic level, with both sides defending their positions and attacking the positions of their opponents." The program will examine the prospects for the success of the Belgrade conference and what will happen in terms of East-West relationships and in terms of human suffering--if it fails.

fidgeting and always moving and you have to get in all those steps. I had to do E.J. Peaker in 'Hello, Dolly' and it was rough. I met her at a party and told her I had said, 'If I ever meet this girl I'm going to punch her right She laughed." Most of the stars Sharon has doubled Wayne, Barbra Streisand, George C. Scott, Angie Dickinson and others don't know someone else is putting their footsteps on the sound track- Gene Hackman was a disbeliever when Eric told him Sharon had walked and run for him in "The French Connection." He's a big guy, husky," said Eric.

"He turned to Sharon and little one, you did my He couldn't believe it until she explained. A lot of people are unaware of Foley." Sharon has even done Foley in fight scenes, doing the footwork for Charles Bronson in "Hard Times" and for James Earl Jones in "The Great White Hope." "Fight scenes are pretty tough work," she said. "You know how they dance around in boxing. There's no pattern. You can't guess where they are going to go next.

"So Alice and I were studying and studying The Great White Hope' film and then we did the footwork. When we finished, the director said, "That was absolutely "Later, Alice and I were discussing it and I said, 'I thought I did James Earl Jones She looked at me kind of funny and said, 'I was doing him, We both did Jones and thought the other was doing the other boxer, and it worked out beautifully." When not doing Foley and caring for a husband and two small children in their North Hollywood home, Sharon is writing a TV movie to be entitled "Dancer." It's a business she knows from the ground up. Hollywood celebre NBC buys book rights By MARILYN BECK Don't be surprised if the names of the Irving Wallace family start popping up as frequently on TV show credits as they do on the Best Seller literary lists Irving informs me that NBC has purchased rights to "The Book of Lists." the current top-seller he's authored with daughter Amy and son David Wal- lechinsky. If you're ready for this, the network's not only interested in making that massive collection of off-beat trivia the basis of a two-hour show it's paying an awesome amount of money to option four additional "Book of Lists" specials. And that's only the beginning.

NBC has also purchased rights to Irving and David's 1975 hit "The People's Almanac" to build into a weekly variety show. The network was so eager for that property, in fact, that it has agreed 28-year-old Wallechinsky may be producer of the show David is also co-author (with Michael Medved) of the 1976 best-seller "What Rally Happened to the Class of '65? a non-fiction study of his classmates from Palisades High in Los Angeles. It is the basis for an NBC series this fall and David still can't quite believe that himself. As he understands it. the show will be fictionalized anthology series, that will flash from the turmoil of the 60's to the present day At present one of Irving's best-seller's of the 60's, "The is being readied as a 12-hour CBS miniseries for airing next spring; and his 1960 "Chapman Report" novel (which became a 1962 sensational movie) is being made into a TV series pilot by 20th Century-Fox with the intent of running it as the continuing story of a sex survey team's ventures in a small town.

And if that's not enough, the networks are already discussing the purchase of "The Two" for a miniseries though the text by 21 year-old Amy and her father won't even be published till next March. "The Two" is the true story of married Siamese twins which you might consider a weird theme for home entertainment. The Wallaces probably think so. too. but at this point they wouldn't be surprised if a network offered to buy their copies of the telephone directory for adaptation as a prime-time series.

The Cinemaland seen: Dennis Weaver's wife is lucky to be alive. Gerry was driving her new Honda car in North Hollywood Thursday when the auto was broadsided and slammed into a telephone pole by a earful of teenagers being pursued by the police. She ended up with a minor concussion and seven stitches being taken in the back of her head And Dennis nearly ended up cancelling his "Hee Haw" taping date and rushing back from Nashville to be by her side 'til he was convinced she was alright Phyllis Diller intends to spend the period from June 17-21 taking a quiet work break.
