That appropriation includes the approximately $8.5 million estimated to give teachers a 10 percent pay raise, The pay raise bill is now on the Governor's desk and he is expected to sign it into law. The Senate voted to require new teachers to take a national teachers' exam in order to teach in Mississippi's public schools. The bill, which had already won House sanction, directs the State Board of Education to require all new teaching applicants to take either the National Teacher's Examination or an examination of achievement. The move was an effort to continue to upgrade the public school system.

In the House a plan to set up a state- wide insurance pool to allow schools to acquire badly- needed insurance of bafidings won' approval, The measure had previously won Senate adoption, and Brooks voted for the bill. All schools, whether public or private, will be covered by the proposal. The House also approved a bill setting assessments on soybeans at the mills, with the proceeds earmarked for soybean promotion on national and state levels. And the lower chamber sent to the Senate a bill which would give free college educations to children of lawmen and firemen killed in the line of duty. The measure had previously passed the Senate but included only the children of lawmen.

This was a deadline week being the last week a general bill could be reported out of committee. There remains three more weeks of this sess- ion.
