20-A-- 26-1-- 24-A-- WAYNE WILSON Capsule Reviews of Current Movies Von Nuys 21, 1967 'Doll' Turns Out! to Be Daredevil LOOK-ALIKES far their distinctive hornrimmed glasses, gentlemen above are members of Michael Caine Fan Club, which turned out faithfully for preview of spy thriJIer "Billion Dollar Brain." Caine, first star since Harold Lloyd to make hornrims his trademark, is familiar reluctant secret agent in new film, now showing at Vogue and Fine Arts Theatres. Magnificently photographed and tastefully executed, "The Bible" is a masterpiece of movie- making, surpassing all its predecessors in beauty and fidelity to source. Covering the first 22 chapters of Genesis, it brings to the screen, with amazing clarity and simplicity, the Old Testament version of the conception of man and WSL early struggles with right and wrong. Especially beautiful are the segments devoted to the creation of the earth, the story of Adam and Eve and the fable of Noah and his ark. Directed by John Huston and photographed under the artistic hand of Giuseppe Rotunno, each frame of the three-hour-long epic is like a painting by a great master, instilled with feelings of love and reverence.

Settings, camera work and art direction are superlative, and background music by Toshiro Mayuzumi is grippingly effective. George C. Scott is cast as Abraham in the film's most pointed and lengthy tableau. His portrayal of the "Father of Kings" whose faith is tested by God is worth Academy Award consideration. Huston himself, steps in to play the rascally Noah, and a cast, of international stars fill the other leading roles.

One sequence, the Tower of Babel spectacle, intrudes on an otherwise smoothly fashioned script, perhaps because it has little buildup in the story and seems to appear out of context. Inspiration and religion aside, as a tale of love and faith, "The Bible" is a great picture. Take one ski-nosed widower and his seven children, add a mop-haired nuddle-ase babysitter and a dnmb cop, sprinkle lightly with of humor and throw in a wad of S1MO bills and what do yon have? "Eight On the Lam." It's Boh Hope's newest formula film, predictable from start to finish. Hope of course is the widowed bank cashier who stumbles over the head of valuable, lettuce in the parking lot of his local supermarket. He could use the money suit is worn out, but the pockets are no one claims the hoodie, he decides it's his, and besrins throwing money aronnd like a sailor on shore leave.

About this same time, a $50,000 shortage appeared in his books at the hank. Innocent but scared, he packs up his formidable family and flees. DEC. 24 Anthony Newley's song vjriting success is such that he could retire tomorrow in his early thirties and live handsomely off royalties the rest of his life. Over 150 artists recorded "What Kind Of Tool Am 11" Only "White has been more widely recorded. "We wrote 'Fool' and 'Once In A Lifetime' the same afternoon in the toilet at my place. Leslie Bri- cuEse stretched out in the bathtub, and I sat on the commode.

It was the only place we could shut ourselves off from the phone end families," Newley says. Newley gets his first major exposure in "Doctor ol 11 tie," premiering tonight at the Hollywood Paramount Theater for the benefit of the Motion Picture and Television Relief Fund. Both script and songs for the film were written by Bricusse. Rex Harrison, Sara antha Eggar and Richard Attenborough, along with Newley, top the cast. Despite his success as a composer-lyricist, Newley wants most to be a performer.

He was elated with signing for the role of Matthew Mugg in the comedy about Dolittle, a physician who learns to converse with animals. As the Irish purveyor of meat for cats and dogs, Newley gets an opportunity to identify himself firmly in the public ken as an actor. "Acting movie acting is a continual love scene for me," he enthuses, even though I've been tremendously successful in stage work." "When Leslie and I wrote those two shows we tried to something different. But no critic even gave us an A for effort. I directed the shows because only Leslie and I understood what we were trying to accomplish.

And I appeared in them for the same reason. "But the harder we tried the more firmly we were mired. I'll never try to do all those jobs in the theatre again. As a performer I was too preoccupied with the responsibilities of director and co-producer to do a good job. I'm at home in front of the camera." John as the real mistress. If George Marshall intended to direct without a goal in mind, he succeeded. Frankenheimer takes a long, hard look at Formula I auto racing in his i a a Christmas bundle "Grand Prix," a three-and-one-half hour tour of the European race circuit with four world championship contenders Pete Aron, (James Garner) of America, Jean-Pierre Sarti (Yves Montand) France, Scott Stoddarrt (Brian Bedford) of.England and Nino Barlini (Antonio Sabato) of Italy. Unfortunately, the young American director seems so hung up on the subject matter and turned on by "the thrill, of it all" that he leaves his audience with too little over too long a time. It's a mottled mixture of spectacular photography but spotty acting, beautiful setting but stereotyped story, fin music but sophomoric script and just too much behind-the-wheel you- are-tiiere views of pavement rushing past at 180 miles an hour.

In an effort to be realistic Frankenheimer keeps the hlood-and-guts of racing to a minimum, thereby forgetting ordinary entertainment values and the customary concessions to audiences. In listening to the world's great drivers explain their compulsion for speed, writer Robert Alan Arthur apparently picked out only glorious statements, which makes the screenplay something directly out of an Iowa cornfield. Only Montand, Miss Saint and Bedford are convincing in their performances, although minor parts are filled well by Adolfo Celi as Continued on Next Page Her name's Bond snd, a screen tough-girl, shi concedes no points to her male namesake.
