THE NEWS Friday, August 11, 1961 U-A-- Sitting around talking the other day with a young Valley man newly returned from the U.S. Army in Germany, we were interested in his remarks a i music among the youth there. So we asked Darrell Hazen to write down a few thoughts. The following are some of his observations. Being stationed very near Heidelberg for two years afforded me the opportunity to frequent the many music and night spots there.

Bock 'n' roll is, as here, the rage with the younger teen set. The juke box plays a very prominent role in Germany, so than here, probably due to the fact very few of the German youth can afford to own a record player of his own. Hence the kids gather at the nearest "els-cafe," which is i a to our soda fountain, and the juke box is king. R'n'R Fans There are many rising young European stars in the 'n' field there but the American artists predominate. Elvis Presley and Fats are the big favorites.

The university students In a beyond a doubt, must rank among the world's most avid jazz fans. Jazz is so popular in Heidelberg there are at least four clubs devoted strictly to it In addition, there are several more In the Immediate surrounding area. These clubs are excellent and the very small membership is well worth it Most of the clubs are underground--literally cellars. The walls and ceilings are usually granite and mally painted with expres- slonistic designs and figures --the furnishings small unorthodox type chairs and tables. The groups who perform are a good though perhaps not well known.

Dixieland is by far the most popular jazz form and a good Dixieland band plays to capacity crowds throughout the country. All in all, I think American and German students haVe very similar musical tastes, the big difference seems to be that the Germans have created greater opportunities for the young people to pursue and enjoy their interest This seems to be a rather difficult thing to do in this area with live music. I believe a jazz club (not necessarily in the a style) would be a very worthwhile addition to Val- iejt student life and think students here would support it Hope some enterprising soul will heed my calL If anybody has any ideas along this line, let us know. Album Notes The original sound track music from Jules Verne's "Master of the World" is being released by Faster on Vee-Jay (LP 4000), executive producer Bandy Wood. The trend toward these long-play sound tracks is still strong and the music from this film is adequate --and Baxter is very good.

In the singles department a young Canoga Park man may nave a winner in "Fat Man" released on the Josan label. "Mo" Klein is the man's name though on this record he is listed as Louie and the Fat Men. Mo is in a Valley real estate office and in his spare time is a partner with Attj-. Inrufe Littwte in the recording field. He has long been associated with the recording business and has been in charee of promotion and public relations for the Mary Kay Trio and headed Weptem Stales Promotion for MGM.

To our way of thinking the back side of the Fat Man i a "The is tnc better. Remember throo or fdi.r years aco when The rrn had a hit "Ai'b "YfJUTij; Tttr tf'-' on? "Tisht tV-ueh it i-rj't Quite li-unshlf other ride Percy Mercy of Scotland Yar?" is inaudible.
