Thursday, April 21,1977 Sky hawks gear U p Hawaii, Clemson lead college baseball to open title defense ByTOBYZWIKEL They have a new coach and several new players, but the Los Angeles Skyhawks are hoping the results will be the same as last year, when they won the American Soccer League title in their first year in the league Max Wozniak, 49, a native of Poland who has coached on three continents and directed the U S National Team, succeeds R o n N e w m a n a t t h e Skyhawks' helm and no one realizes more than he the task that faces him "The Sk hawks had a tremendous team last season," Wozniak said of the club that \vent 15-2-6 "I thought they were one of the best teams in the country Thev were entertaining and exciting "But I have to think about this year We cannot win on the strength of our record We'll have to win them like every other team in the league Since we did win the championship last season, every club will be gunning for us " Wozniak, however, has been blessed with a solid group of returning players, including forwards Jimmy Hinch and Jimmy Holland, the top scorers from last year's squad. Doug McMillan and Alt) McKenzie, midfielder Leif Wer- neid, defender Javier Loza and goalkeeper Marine Cano Battling Cano for the starting goalie's job will be Mansour Rashidi, 25 a natn e or Iran who was the gem unco\ ered in the team's tryout camp, according to John Irvine, director of communications for the Skyhawks Cano, a product of the American Youth Soccer Organization, came on strong last season after Englishman Brian Parkinson was injured and was expected to have the job to himself this year But Rashidi could change all that Loza, 28, developed into perhaps the Skyhawks' top defender last year and will be joined in the rear guard this season by Englishmen Mark Nickeas, 20, and David Lyon, 26, and either Miguel Lopez, 23, a graduate of Whittier College, or Coco Mancilla, 26, who has played for Wozniak in the semi-pio ranks in Los Angeles for the past five years Werneid, at 33 the elder statebinan on the team this season, will be joined at midfield by English players Paul Taylor and Jimmy Weston, with Garo Osmaman, 24, a native of Lebanon who now resides in Los Angeles, standing in the wings McMillan, Hinch and Holland will give the Skyhawks a potent forward line McMillan appears to have recovered from a serious knee injury two years ago and sparked the Skyhawks to their 2-1 triumph over the New York Apollo in last year's title clash Hinch is still playing in England and will not be available for Saturda night's season-opener against the Call forma Sunshine at 8 o'clock at Santa Ana Bowl Irvine, who recently returned from a recruiting trip to England where he signed Hinch, Nickeas, Lyon, Taylor and Weston, is \ ery high on the second edition of the Skyhawks, whose home opener against the Santa Barbara Spikers is Sunday afternoon, May 8, at 2 o'clock.
