16LAIgona (la.) Upper Des Moines Monday, Sept. 22, 1969 Expect Attendance Of 400 Algona Host This Week To State VFW Pow-Wow Algona will host some 400 members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of Iowa, tliis coming weekend. The state Auxiliary will also meet in conjunction with the men's groups. It is the annual Fall Pow-Wow of the organization. The event will begin with a dance, Friday evening, at the V.F.W.

building here. Regular business sessions begin Saturday morning for both V.F.W. and Auxiliary. V.F.W. meetings will be held in the home of Post 2541, and the Auxiliary meetings will take place in the Legion's Veterans Memorial Building.

All state officers, district commanders, a national representative, and many others will be in attendance. Saturday afternoon, three Kossuth men will be on the program State Senator Wayne Keith, State Representative Berl Priebe, and Kossuth County Assessor Larry Hudson. Each will speak briefly on matters pertaining to veterans' legislation, and taxation matters with reference to veterans' properties. Paul Brown of Mason City, Junior Vice Commander of the state organization, is State Pow-Wow Chairman, and Ken Roethler of Algona is the local chairman. Beulah Gaskill of Cedar Rapids is the State Auxiliary Pow-Wow Chairman, and Pauline Batt is acting in a similar capacity for the local post Auxiliary.

3 Persons Are Injured In Lakota Crash Three area persons, Harlan C. Harms, 30, and his wife, Pamela, 26, Titonka, and Maynard D. Jensen, 55, Lakota, were injured in a 2-car mishap a mile south of Lakota on a county blacktop road at 10:05 a. m. Thursday.

Mr. and Mrs. Harms were taken to Britt for treatment, while Mr. Jensen, who was charged with failing to turn left at an intersection, was treated at Buffalo Center. Mr.

Harms suffered a bruised knee and eye laceration, Mrs. Harms, laceration on-her forehead, and Mr. Jensen, scalp laceration. The Harms auto, driven by Mr. Harms, was headed north when the Jensen car.

turned left into a driveway at the Ronald Heetland farm. An estimated $1,900 damage resulted to the autos and there was also $10 damage to the Heetland mail box. Deputy Sheriff Chuck Day investigated. Day was also called to investigate when an auto driven by Bernice V. Alt, 50, Burt, went out of control two miles north and one-half mile east of Algona at 5:36 p.

m. Wednesday. The driver escaped injury and the auto sustained an estimated $225 damage. The vehicle was headed south at the time. The driver saw a car coming out of the Ted Hoover driveway, applied her brakes and the car went into a ditch and back on the road where it landed on its side.

A third mishap occurred at Burt Wednesday at 5:05 p. m. A truck driven by Melvin L. Johnson, 46, Burt, struck a parked auto owned by Donald L. Eden, Titonka, on the main street, resulting in an estimated $85 damage to the car.

Paul Schwieger, Burt marshal, investigated. Completes Army Duty Jack Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Williams, was discharged from the army recently in California. He is spending several days with his sister, Marijane and her husband, Mr.

and Mrs. Ben Herbst, Santa Ana, and will then return to Algona. Young Driver Charged After Mishap Friday A pair of autos sustained an estimated $1,100 damage in a crash on East Nebraska street here at 5:44 p. m. Friday.

There were no personal injuries reported. Drivers of the vehicles were Judy K. Arrowood, 23, and Michael E. Goodman, 17, Algona. The latter was charged with improper backing by police who investigated.

The Arrowood auto was headed west on Nebraska when the Goodman car backed from the curb, resulting in the collision. DECA Chapter At AHS Names New Officers The Algona chapter of Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) held its first business meeting of the year Sept. 19. Dave Dettman was elected president; Ron Matz, vice president; Joyce Dearchs, secretary; Dick Besch, treasurer; and Virginia Priester, reporter. DECA is a student group aimed at developing leadership qualities in students.

Students enrolled in the DE program study marketing, merchandising and management in the classroom and learn through part-time employment in local retail businesses. Rites Pending Funeral services for Emma C. Strom, 89, former Algona resident, were pending Monday at McCullough's Funeral Service here. She died in Washington state and her body was to be shipped here for final rites. Mrs.

Strom was preceded in death by her husband, August, in 1960. A complete obituary will appear in the next issue of The Upper Des Moines. Julius Monson, Ex-Wesleyan, Crash Victim Funeral services for Julius W. Monson, 45, Des Moines, formerly of Wesley, were held at 1 p. m.

Thursday at Des Moines, with burial following at Veterans Memorial Hill. Mr. Monson was killed at 7 a. Monday, Sept. 15, in a truck mishap on Interstate 35 a mile north of the Van Wert interchange.

The truck he was driving crashed off a paved but un-opened portion of the Interstate, according to the highway patrol which investigated. Julius William Monson was born at Wesley where he attended school and lived until moving to Des Moines 11 years ago. Survivors include his wife, Mary; two daughters, Julie and Vicky, at home; two step-daughters, Mrs. Mary HabickandMrs. Louis Fisher, Des Moines; a step-son, Wayne Burkheimer, Indianola; his mother, Mrs.

Eva Black, Washington, his father, Albert Monson, Algona; one sister, Mrs. DeLane Craig, Washington, three brothers, Wilbur, Algona; Oscar, Wesley, and Martin, Des Moines; and 14 grandchildren. Lone Rock Dev. Corp. Meeting Held Sept.

16 A meeting of the Lone Rock Development Corp. was held at the town hall there Tuesday evening, Sept. 16, with the following present: E. A. Lee, Erich Seegebarth, L.

A. Newbrough, K. W. Jackson, W. R.

O'Donnell, Ralph Bierstedt, Ervin Votteler, Art Priebe and Dale Schroeder. Memberships in the corporation are being sold for $10 per person or $15 for two persons from the same family. The group plans to hold a general meeting for the public soon. Details will be announced later. Algona Principal On Unit Making Playoff Study Algona High School principal Elgin Allen has been named to a special committee organized by the Iowa High School Athletic Association to study the possibility of play-off football games between high school teams.

The committee, made up of 20 high school principals, superintendents, coaches, athletic directors and two members of the I.H.S.A.A. Board of Control, will meet Oct. 1 or 2 in Boone to study the pros and cons and make recommendations. 24 Garrigan High School will host its annual College Night Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 7:30 to 9:30 p. m. Over 35 colleges, including the neighboring Area Community Colleges, the armed services and three business schools will be represented. Any students from the neighboring schools are most welcome A special welcome is extended to the parents to attend.

MIKE SMITH Myron "Mike" Smith, agency manager of Farm Bureau Insurance, attended a Life Underwriters meeting at Ft. Dodge, Monday, Sept. 15. At the meeting, Mike was awarded a citation, who as LUTC instructor, has demonstrated leadership in the field of life underwriter education and has exhibited sincere dedication to The Council, fellow life underwriters and the community. Joint Faculty Meetings Held Teachers from St.

Michael's School in Whittemore and St. Cecelia's School in Algona met Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 16, for the first in a series of monthly professional growth meetings. Sister Mary Joan Lickteig, PBVM from Dubuque, was the speaker for the afternoon. The topic for the session was "The Techniques of Tuesday evening Sister Mary Joan spoke at the Couples' Club meeting.

In talking with those present Sister pointed out significant change sin educational trends and gave parents practical suggestions on how they can prepare their children for learning in general and reading in particular. Account Matter An account matter was filed in district court here this week. Clifford Hughes et al, plaintiffs, are seeking to collect the balance alleged due on an insurance premium from Donald Hilbert, defendant. The amount asked is $811.21. Eastern Star Award A Swea City girl, Maxine Clark, has been named as one of 24 students in the state of Iowa to share in grants totaling $12,250 given by the Eastern Star Grand Chapter of Iowa.

Exact amount of her scholarship total was not given, but they range between $250 and $500 a year. Qualified Scuba Diver Jeff Stephenson, Algona, has been graded as a qualified scuba diver, having completed a basic NASD course at Diver's Den, Okoboji; The course includes dives in 50 and 75 feet of water.
