(UP) Luther and Loras last night staged a repetition of their 1947 Iowa conference rivalry as the Norsemen won 42 to 37. The victory gave Luther an even split with Loras this season and undisputed possession of second place in the league. It also repeated exactly similar circumstances of last year.

Arnold Veglahn, Luther center, bested Mickey Marty, Loras forward, in last night's scoring battle between the two conference leaders. Veglahn hit for 18 points, while two Norsemen fouled out in holding Marty, one of the leading point-getters in the nation, to nine. Marty outscored Veglahn 21 points to nine in their meeting earlier this season. DES MOINES. An (AP) The Braves purchased Epperly from their farm club in the American association at the close of the 1917 season after Al, a right-hand hurler, had posted a season record of It victories and seven losses.

He won one game from the Syracuse Chiefs in the Little World series in which Milwaukee took the championship. Epperly is now 29 years old, but he looks more like a youth of 21. He's kept himself in tip-top condition while working at the Davenport Spring company during the winter months. Since Feb. 1, he has undertaken a voluntary conditioning program at the Davenport V.

W'HEN Al was graduated from Glidden high school in at the age of 17, he immediately went into professional baseball with Eau Claire in the Wisconsin State league.

He became property of the Chicago Cubs and in 1937 was sent to Moline in the Threc-I league where he was a teammate of Hank Majeski, current Philadelphia A's third sacker. and Kirby Higbe, now a Pittsburgh mound star. Epperly compiled a record of 14 wins and seven losses with the Plow City nine to earn a tryout with the Cubs the next spring. He spent most of the 1938 season in Chicago, being used chiefly in relief roles, winning two games while losing none. He made four trips to Catalina for spring training before he eluded the clutches of the Chicago chain.

Officials Appointed For Regional Meets Blake scored a total of 24 points in leading the Redmen to the upset victory. The second half uprising, led by Forward Ed Freese and Guard Hap Merritt, quickly cut that lead and Simpson went on to fashion a 10-point margin of its own. Don Morris, St. Ambrose guard, led the losers with 20 points. Rock Island and Moline officials today were named to work the regional basketball tournaments in Illinois.

Al won 16 and lost only five for the Seals in 1943, a record which resulted In his being drafted by the Chicago White Sox. Due to pressing duties on the Iowa farm during the height of the war in 1944 and 1945, Epperly shunned baseball for those two seasons. He returned in 1946 and went to spring training with the White Sox.

Later that year, the Brewers bought him from the Pale Hose, Al made 22 appearances on the hill that summer, winning seven and dropping 10. His earned-run average was 2.83, ranking him seventh in the league. Last year his 14-7 mark was good enough for the Braves to give him another chance In the majors. The righthander fears this might be his last chance for a crack in the big show. Al will join three of his Milwaukee teammates in Florida, including Verne Bickford, pitcher; Glenn Elliott, southpaw hurler; and Alvin Dark, sensational shortstop who last season was voted as the rookie of the year in the American association and ranked high when the vote for the most valuable player was taken. Dark is being counted upon to take over the short field post for the Braves this season. Epperly had nothing but words of praise for the southern boy, only two years off the college campus. "Dark is a dandy ball player," Epperly said, "and if he hits, he's certain to be in the lineup every day.

He's plenty good in the field." The victory was ample revenge for a postseason football loss that marred Montezuma's record.

Harold Schughman's basket in the last 30 seconds gave Strawberry Point a 32-30 win over Manchester and Jessup edged Independence 35-34 in other class highlights. Ankeny, Livermore, Fontanels, Dike, Steambat Rock, Hudson, Readlyn, Charter Oak, New Providence, Diagonal, Swea City, West Chester and Pulaski were among the top clubs advancing. "He's a great guy, and I think Davenport fans will like him," Al told us. He saw Holt in action in the American association when the new Davenport pilot was a coach ith Kansas City in 1946.

Al got to know Goldie pretty well while Holt was manager of the Yakima. club in the Western International league In 1940 and 1941. "He should do all right in helping to develop young ball players here," Epperly stated. Al married the former Vivian Gibson of Rock Island while he was with Moline in 1937. and for that reason makes his home in Davenport during the off season.

As for his chances of making the grade under the big tent, Al casually remarked, "I'll have to do it soon.
