Newsweek Publishes Interesting Report on State's 'Bumper Crop' ED XOTE: Under the California heading In National Affairs section of Its current Issue, the magazine Xewsweek publishes an interesting report on this traffic situation--with its attendant toll. "The article, titled "Bumper Crop," is reproduced for its particular value in an area, where influx of population daily adds more Tehicles to the streets the San Fernando Valley.

Man still outnumbers the automobile in California, but the cars are rapidly catching up. This will hardly come as a surprise to the bumper-to-bumper set who meet twice a day on the state's many freeways, but the Dept. of Motor Vehicles nonetheless offered statistical proof last week of the march of machines. At last count, said the department, the state's population was its registered automobiles, 8,681,162. But new vehicle registrations, the statisticians added, climbed to 489,824 last year--well ahead of the number of babies born in the state during the period California man is also letting the auto overtake him in another way by killing him off.

The state reported 3723 motor-vehicle fatalities last year. And from its voluminous investigations, the Motor Vehicle Dept. can describe statistically the driver likely to be at the wheel of the next death car: He will be a man, 21:5 years old, a tradesman, a or "blue collar" worker who drives 17,591 miles a year--with foot slammed down on the accelerator. Point of View 'Gitele': Slices of Life. Raw to Well Done Out of Fillmore Ansel of City of Hope By JAMES J.

PACKMAN JCdltor, The San Francisco "Please," I begged, "I want only to make a living for my children and myself." Betrayed and loft with two little girls by one gambling husband, then abandoned and left in debt by another gambling husband who disappeared after fathering her third daughter, Gubsie Kimball looked tearfully around the room at her husband's creditors; she saw little sympathy for an inexperienced woman who them $2,700 with only $1.300 in goods in her Fillmore Street stote, and $S3 in cash to meet the debt. Except-And this was the first good bieak in the life of ussie Kimball, a break that has paid off in untold good for thousands of people who have wondered about their benefactor and how she got that way. describes it so in her book, "Gitele" (that's what her beloved, patriarchal, invalid, immigrant father called her): "Then a tall, distinguished looking man In his thirties got up to leave and said, 'Let the poor woman have the store That one act of deep sympathy and kindliness toward a human being unknown to her was by Max Sobel, who since has become one of California's outstanding chic leaders, philanthropists and liquor distributors and who continued to play a significant role in her life. And then, driven by the needs of her little girls', a consuming urge to pay her debts, and an abiding faith in God, the author turned to, a woman alone in a little store on Fillmore Street, working from 8 in the morning until 2 in the morning, seven clays a week, cordial to her decent customers, repelling drunks, and ignorant of the neighborhood harlotry. An innocent, innocent.

Success came slowly, but surely, and with it happiness that she had never known before, never even dreamed of in her wretched childhood in New York tenements. And finally, to show her gratitude, she embarked on the never ending voyage of aiding the less fortunate. She chose the City of Hope, the famous medical institution dedicated to comforting victims of catastrophic diseases, and to finding cures. The vehicle she built is known as "The Singletons" chapter of City of Hope. "The Singletons" is unique in that Gussie founded the group as a place for unmarried young men and women over 25 to meet under the most romantic auspices, to do charity.

And now Gussie has written a book, made of thick slices of life, sprinkled with ripe and racy Yiddish, buttered with joy in her daughters, their husbands and children, her friendship with such as the merchant Weinstein, George and Tula Christopher, Dr. Sidney Gospc; peppered with tragic memories of a dying father, a wretchedly overworked, beloved mother, sisters and brothers who rejected her both as a child and as a betrayed and friendless wife and mother. It's well worth reading, not only as journal of a good woman's life but as a rare bit of memorabilia about San Francisco. You'll marvel at the literary skill when you learn she stopped school in the 6th grade and didn't resume her education until late in life at Marina Adult. School.

A prize pupil indeed, and a credit to the proposition that the second chance in school is a most rewarding experience worth every penny of tax money. The book is published by Vantage Press, at and royalties go to the City of Hope. Checks may be sent to Gitele -Singletons of City of Hope, P.O. Box 841, Oakland 4, Cal. The book makes a fine gift.
