Having lived in Europe and New York most of her life, Rosemary has finally made the move to Holly- although she still plans to keep her apartment in New York.

She was going to rent an apartment in the Los Angeles area, but found it almost impossible to find one that would take a single woman with a dog. Instead she finds only a faceless, unemotional machine. Mother Rosemary Murphy is anxious for her to leave immediately, hut an arctic storm snows in the Minnesota mansion, forcing Miss Duke to spend several nights there. The mansion is full of macabre family secrets that question the mother's hatred of Miss Duke for depriving her of the last few weeks of the son's life.

She finds living there a retarded, nearly speechless sister and a murdering, insane cousin being hunted by the police. The tension builds as the Teal horror of the secrets are laid bare, giving her real cause for alarm. The final scene is a gem of imagination and horror. The only physical violence of the movie occurs in the last 30 seconds. The viewer sits for a moment stunned, feeling the full i a ct of this single scene.
