Sunder, April 21,1937 (Cdlif.) VALLEY BOWLING NOTES Reiny Preimesberger Some final notes on our recent trip to the ABC tour my at Fort Worth, Texas: Despite our avidity for bowling and everything that goes with it, the highlight of our jaunt was the stop at Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. This wonder of the world de- ties description and we doubt that, even Walt Disney at his best could remotely duplicate this wondrous spectacle. As we stepped off the elevator which takes you from ground level to a more than 700-foot descent into the earth, Joe Lyou of the Mirror-News surveyed the coffey shop, cafeteria and souvenir a vhich greet joii at the subterranean level, and stated very somberly "This place will never make any money-- too much overhead." Then another comedian in our group fame up with the observation that it would be difficult to address the picture postcards we ait had purchased. When asked ivby. and Mrs. Guy Mitchell talk over upcoming 31st annual Newhall-Saugus Rodeo planned Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5, with big Bob Burrows (right), top rodeo performer and motion picture cowboy. Mitchell, a former rodeo contestant, has been named honorary parade marshal for the event. Burrows and a host of the nation's greatest cowboys will compete, Rodeo Brings Back Touch of Old West in Newhall Area Time was not too long ago that the bristling San Fernando Valley was the pastoral home of the herse instead of the street-cluttered habitat of the automobile. What with the post-war mushrooming of housing developments, industry, proposed freeways and other modern the poor horse, ranch, cowboy and other things western see-in to be going the way of the oranse groves out.

However, the horse and the cowboy are still going pretty Eti-ong in the Valley, flesptte these inroads of so- called civilization. Take Lysle Greenmarfs upcoming 31st annual Newhall Saugus Rodeo, billed for Saturday and Sunday. May 4-5, sanctioned by the Rodeo Cowboys Association. The nation's foremost glers, such as America's Number One cowboy Casey Tibns. Jim Shoulders, D'uane Howard Harry Tompkins, Elliott Calhoun, Guy Week 1 Buck Rutherford, Harley May and Shoat Webster, will compete in the rodeo, and there'll be several entries of strictly San Fernando Valley cowboys as well, just to prove that the horse ain't quite dead yet in this area.

Foremost Valley competitor will be rangy Bob Burrows, for 21 years one of the rodeo circuit's greatest performers, but who new devotes probably more time to performing as a motion picture cowboy than to that of a rodeo contestant. Born in i jj and raised on a ranch, Burrows started competing in rodeos at 16 and won an assortment of titles, Including that of world cbampton in team roping. Bob, 36. who lives in North Hollywood, has competed in rodeos in every lop city of the nation, and even met his pretty wife in New York when appearing in a rodeo there. She was a native New Yorker and knew about as much about horses as Bob did about subways, but it's turned out to- be a real life version of "The Cowboy and the Lady," as now Cecelia is a real cowgirl, anc son.

Blair, 7, is a real rootin'- tootin' cowboy, junior grade Big Bob has doubled for just about every movie cow- hoy hero in the business, and is a good friend to most of them, He's done a lot of doubling for Errol Flynn, performing such feats as bucking horses taking falls, flights, and the very dangerous art of the "transfer," which is the routine where the cowboy leaps from a horse onto the driverless horse team and wagon at a speed of about 30 miles per hour. has plenty of wounds to show from his years of rodea riding and movie work, having had four serious operations for trick knees, as well as a host of other crip pling FIRST BRIDGE First bridge across the Mis- issippi was at Davenport, la. The sudden shift from deep water action to gamefish schools all' along the Southland coast is bearing this out with each passing day. And the tremendous surge of action off Oceanside since the tart of scheduled operations but a week ago bears this out strongly. Full of calico and bull bass, pins a hefty run of small white sea bass in the best numbers of the past several years is heading the siait of Ihe top season. Yellowtail and big halibut also are beginning to move in down off Oceanside in good numbers and will soon play an integral part of the 'ishtnjj there. Watch for a big break in the iatalina Island picture as, the past few days, calico and bull 0355, white sea big barracuda and yellowtail are getting playful with the fishermen's offerings.

Good catches of the bass have been listed as daily events, a pre-seawm indications point to the Santa Monica Bay coming back into favor with the salt water angling clan as the schools of gamefish appear to be heading for some old time feeding grounds in their old time numbers. Results in the Beach section show the bass family coming in strong on the Rocky Point grounds with good catches reported almost daily. Another good sign is the show of halibut which started this week on the pier. Numerous flatties were sacked up with the top weight scaling a cool 19 pounds. The show of fish in the bay waters brought a change of boat schedules at Santa Monica pier as a Jackie Rea and Shuler put their whole fleet into action in the a for the schools this week.

Two half-day boats, with one going for the deep water fishing and the other after bass and halibut are on daily runs now. All-day boat operations open this Saturday bringing all of the far-flung Day banks into reach of the Santa Monica pier fishermen. Completing the picture in this area, Malibu pier fleet is also in the running again with half day runs carded to the bass beds above the pier. Good catches of calico hare ed wife, Aileen, denied charges ibarring Crayton Frye, then been listed since the start of live bait fishing this week. Some a i i ajso in the catch with the big spring runs for which Dltalibu is famed still to come ap to par.

Full operations will go into effect May 4 (Saturday) when Bill Huber puts both the all- day boat and the barge "Star of Malibu" back in service. Port Hueneme followed in the wake of the Malibu organization with their announcement of schedules back in vogue again, The popular Linda IJPC lea res daily for the Santa Crux and Anacapa I a fishing grounds at 5:30 a.m. Within the next couple of weeks the speedy Island Clipper comes back for another year's duty featuring sleeping facilities. Early morning runs are set for this boat as skipper Les Roberts has a 4 a.m. leaving time.

Les plans on hitting for the far reaches of Santa Cruz Island where huge schools of big bull bass are to be found. Spring fishing was also h'igh- lighted along the fresh water branch of the sport with an excellent run of crappie and bluegill at Lake Irvine this past week. Good numbers of catfish along with rainbow trout were a big feature of the results. Another one-ton plant of the rainbow is to be made today in Irvine. of alleged irregularities i handling boxing and wrestling events.
