The Miami News Saturdayl May 30, 1987 6B Art Grace Horse racing Caldeir betting gets better, stilB Isn't best Calder opens the summer season at 1 p.m. today with a common sense approach to its betting I 0 program. The Pick Nine has been buried and there will be no new gimmicks in its place. What bettors will get is more of the tried and true trifecta. the wager of choice for Florida horse players.

Hialeah has the ideal situation perfectas and trifectas on every race. "What we'll have now are an overnight handicap or a good allowance race on Wednesdays." Two-year-olds will continue to make up 50 percent of the available horses for summer racing. "I'd rather have a good two-year-old than a bad older horse," Meyocks said. Several trainers will stable at Calder for the summer season for the first time: Oscar Barrera Kenny Fields, Jimmy Hatchett, Henry Maziarz, Billy Croll, Angel Medina, Ray Tamargo and Bill Mullin. Neal Winick and Robin Frank have come back after spending a few summers elsewhere.

Today's feature, the Plantation Handicap for older horses going seven furlongs, came up a terrific betting race. Fourteen are entered, with Dwight D. the favorite and longshot Sunny Prospector the major closer. Mugatea is also likely to finish strong. There are five turnbacks in the field, albeit tiny, ones.

Ward Off Trouble, Princely Lad, Canadian Winter, Bill 'N Harry and Verification are coming off one-mile grass races. The other starters are Dl Roma Feast, Lightin My Pocket, Distinct Stop, Craftstark, Real Forest, and Jeblar. Tomorrow's feature also is a seven-furlong handicap, this time for 3-year-old fillies. The field is headed by Blues Court, Ches Pie and My Sweet Replica. trifecta intact for the fifth and seventh races was secondary to giving better horses a chance to run.

"If we have a good allowance race that only draws seven horses or six or five we'll run it," Noe said. "We're not going to worry about having to drop the trifecta now and then. When owners leave good horses here for the summer, we have to give them a chance to run." The rules for trifecta races require at least eight horses be on the program and at least seven start. Noe has asked the Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering to waive the rule which forbids uncoupled entries in trifecta races. "If they have uncoupled entries in perfectas, why shouldn't they permit the same thing in he asked.

No reason. Except much of the public will scream larceny every time the longer-priced horse runs better than the stablemate. Most players suspect larceny anyway, whether or not you have uncoupled entries (i.e. two horses with the same trainer but different owners). One of the charms of this business is trying to anticipate chicanery real or imagined.

I am totally in favor of uncoupled entries, and always have been. I abhor taking a bad price on a horse because he is part of an entry. Billy Vessels, the latest director of the Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering, said he would approve the Calder request. "The fields can get pretty thin during- the summer," Vessels said. "I have no objections to uncoupled entries in trifecta races." Good for Vessels.

The last thing we need as Division director is a prissy purist. Vessels has not been on the job very long, but first impressions are positive. I think he will be extremely fair in his treatment of horsemen. There will be an early and late double; perfectas on every race except the first. Beats me why the first race is omitted.

Calder did not fare as well as expected with Sunday racing last year, but Noe feels there will be marked improvement this summer. "Unless it rains 13 Sundays in a row tike it did last year," he said. "If we ever get a minors bill through the legislature it will give Sunday racing a real shot in the arm." Calder has dropped Wednesday stakes this summer and will have stakes every Saturday and Sunday. "The Wednesday-stakes were taking away horses who might have run Saturday or Sundav," said racing secretary Terry Meyocks. "We don't have enough stakes-type horses to run three in a five-day period all summer.

Gulfstream came close to go-ing all the way, with perfectas urace and tri's on every race except the first (if you count the new Twin Trifecta). Calder isn't going that far. but at least it has moved away from its standard of only four trifectas per day on the fourth, sixth, eighth and 10th races. This summer there will be two additional tri's, on the fifth and seventh races. Six tri's aren't as good as 10, or nine, but six is a lot better than four.

Management is missing the boat again by not having trifecta betting on the ninth race, which on weekends is the stakes feature. With a full field, the stakes usually are exceptional betting races. At Calder, you can only make perfectas on them. More's the pity. Calder president Kenny Noe Jr.
