I. The special rtudy group Ford Motor Co.

today had announced that its 1955 cars will feature--for the first time in automotive history a Jive- part package of safety devices aimed at substantially reduc ing injuries to passengers-in the event of highway The safety devices are a result of Ford's crash-injury program, first in the industry to embody the new safety concept of "packaging the passenger'' as a means of limiting injuries. Announced at Forum The new injury-prevention study is a companion project to Ford's accident prevention program which includes the development of such things as better brakes and improved Steering. Announcement of the five- piece safety package was made during the two-day National Safety Forum and crash demonstration sponsored by Ford at and attended by almost "lOQ leading traffic safety specialists from the U.S. and Canada for the purpose of exchanging safety- information informally. The new safety features-- appear when the 1D56 cars are introduced--include; 1--A deep-center safely steering wheel which slowly gives way unner crash impact, thus absorbing the energy and distributing it over the driver's chest.

Poor J-alohrjt Safe This, engineers explain, is safer a steering wheels which collapse under impact, exposing the driver to the steering column. Research in dicates about of all injuries to front seat passengers ia ac cidents are received on the mirror. In addition. Ford has redesigned the mirror frame and the front and back seat sup ports to reduce the possibility of seats coming loose under severe shock. researchers have found that almost half of all injuries suffered in automobile accidents are received on the steering wheel, the instrument panel, the mirror, or by being ejected from the vehicle.

Tested in Field The new Ford concept of "packaging the passenger" is based on the principle of first tryingto keep passengers within the vehicle tluring an accident, and. tnen designing car components to heip occupants absorb the energy of the crash, it was slated. Each of the devices has undergone numerous tests in the field, includin- simulated accidents in which life-like dummies rode ir cars which were crashed int other or into concrete and earth barriers, according to Ford officials.
