4.8-Centr.l 4-l-Wtit I Von Nuys March 2, Kingsmen Lose Two, 6-3 Cat Lutheran Still Winless California Lutheran College dropped its third and fourth straight baseball games of the season when Kingsmen lost a double-header to Claremont-Mudd College by scores of 24 and 6-3. The Kingsmen were edged in the opener when the host team scored the winning- run in the bottom of the seventh, then lost a 3-0 lead in the nightcap before succumbing. It was a tough loss for a A I A pitcher Jeff Brock in the first game. He went the first six innings, surrendering only four hits, but gave way to Barry Brobeck, who was tagged with the loss. Claremont Mudd had taken a brief 1-0 lead in the first inning, and it stood up until the seventh when Cal Lutheran tied it, only to lose in the bottom of the frame.

Cal Lutheran got off to a rolling start in the second game, scoring three times in the opening inning. Mike Sheppard was safe on an error, stole second base, then took third when walks to Ron Golden and Dave Howard loaded the bases. That set the stage for Pat Evans, who cracked a double to score two runs then romped home himself ahead of another two- base hit. The advantage, however, lasted only until the bottom of the fifth inning Claremont Mudd took the lead for good by scoring four times. Big blows during the uprising were Don Lewis' two-run triple and a single by Pat Curtis that brought in Lewis.

The 19-year-old Quarry went to work pressuring Ihe San Diego fighter from the opening bell and scored repeatedly with short, chopping right hooks.

Just before the end of the first round, however, Wilson landed a solid left hook to the jaw that threw the undefeated Quarry off balance. Outside of that, Mike was never in any kind of trouble. Brother Jerry Quarry, who paid his fine, was Cont, on 4th Sports I took about" 25 of my young boxing students recently to see Ray "Windmill" White train for one of his main events at Valley Music Theatre. White and chief sparring partner Randy Shields staged a 10-round fight in the gym that was actually better than the one he put on a few days later at the Arena against Terry Lee. Shields made his reputation as a champion Golden Glover in Washington, B.C.

a few years ago, then went on to professional stardom on the East Coast and later, here in California, It is unusual for main event fighters to go 19 rounds in the gym. and I was surprised when they told me they do this several times a week. It takes a lot of stamina, an'd both these guys have it. The workout Avas sensational they fought every minute of every round. It was hard to pick a winner.

Each fighter would take turns on offense and Goodman it was hard to pick a winner when it was all over. White was effective in the early rounds, but as the fight wore on it was Shields who came on stronger. White was able to score with a lot of fast left jabs, and at times Randy didn't even bother getting out of the way. His goal was to move inside where lie does his best work. It reminded me of another sensational gym fight that will go down in boxing history.

In New York's Stillman's Gym. other rugged fighters would battle 10 rounds in the toughest fight anyone could see. It happened every clay to the delight of the fight managers and trainers in New York. One participant was Bart Soni. whose claim to fame was his knockout win on national television against Lamar Clark.

Clark's claim to fame was 4S straight knockout wins. Some nights he cooled as many as three nando Valley Gymnastics Meet at Van Nuys High School. Phil Topar won the 200 butterfly to eclipse teammate Carl Leivo's 'School mark by half a second. Leivo won the conference championship in the 400 in dividual medley with a 4:38.3 clocking. In the 500 freestyle, Ralph, Lee nabbed the CCAA crown by finishing first in 5:02.5 while Bobby Kieswetter topped the 100 freestyle field in 49.5. Dave Corona Avon the conference championship in both the one and three meter diving. The Matadors have nine swimmers and two divers qualified for the national finals March 18-20.

Soni's great gym workout was with Tommy "Hurricane" Jackson, who later fought Floyd Patterson for the heavyweight championship. Soni and Jackson were guys who walked in and never bothered to get away from punches. When opponents would get tired of hitting them, they would conic on stronger and usually win. They were both rugged. White and Shields started out with only a sis- round sparring session scheduled.

After some vicious fighting, whoever lost the sixth round would how about another? The other guy would never back down. After the seventh, the guy who got the worst of il asked for another round, so it would go on and on. Sometimes, they would go as far as 12 rounds -some of the roughest fighting ever seen anywhere. The other day I received a call from Soni from out of the blue. He has been on the shelf for a few years.

I reminded him of the Jackson affair and the similar workout between White and Shields. Soni said he could get in shape and box cither of these guys in a regular fight. Here is a couple of great action fights for some matchmaker. A "While-Shields match would be a natural and Soni against Shields would be good. White and Soni would also be most interesting, loo.
