'Calif.) East-9-B West-7-C Norfh-7-C No.Eajt-7-B Central-7-C Reflections in My Kitchen Window Unknown Enemies May Lurk In Yards, Bulletin Warns By GERRY PRINCE YOUNG Reading, they say, improves the mind. And, since I am what you can only describe as a compulsive reader, I must either have the most improved, or cluttered, mind on record. Ordinary garden-variety readers concentrate upon i like the encyclopedia, newspapers, magazines and top 10 books on the list of best sellers. I read everything that happens to come within my range of vision, and this includes bottle labels, street signs, telephone directories and public health posters, not to mention billboards, bus cards and notices of all kinds. RVADJUVG MATERIALS I also read everything that arrives in the mail, and lee me tell you that this, in itself, is no small accomplishment.

Some of this stuff is pretty profound. I have just finished a little brochure that has opened new mental doors for me. It is a list of publications available for distribution by members of Congress. It was with special inlpr-" est that I read this booklet, since I had always heard about the wonderful pnblica- tions available from KoveriMnent, but I was never before sure about how to order any of them. Now I know.

I alco know that there is a veritable wealth of information available on subjects to which I hadn't really given much thought heretofore. BUNKERS FOR BEEF No one had ever told me that I could send for plans for a "Bunker-type Fallout Shelter for Beef Cattle," or a treatise on "Protecting Log Cabins, Rustic Work and Unseasoned Wood from Injurious Insects in the Eastern United States." Of course, I'm not sure I would have too much need for the latter right now. But "Simple Plumbing Repairs for Home and Farmstead" might come in handy around here, and I can also see a lot of potential in "Building with Adobe and Stabilized Earth Blocks." On the other hand, trying to use "Storing Vegetables and Fruits in Basements, Cellars, Outbuildings and Pits" could turn out to be downright frustrating. Some of ihe listings I found were rather irighten- iug. I never knew before that there ere so many kinds of bugs which might be lurking in the garden waiting to pounce.

Oh, I was aware of tilings like spiders, aphids, ants, flies and gnats, of course. But nobody had ever warned me to be on the lookout for some of the menaces listed in the "How to Control series in this bulletin. I didn't know about the narcissus bulb fly, clover mite, elm bark beetle, i'ire- brat, meadow spittle bug and greater wax moth. BILLIONS OP BUGS I wasn't aware of the threat posed by the potato lealhopper, the pickleworm or the eastern tent caterpillar. I haven't even been on guard against the kliapra beetle, the Hessian fly or the pink boll worm.

After finishing the bulletin, 1 find myself torn by indecision. I could, like the proverbial ostrich, continue to bury my head in the sand of ignorance, figuring what 1 don't know can't possibly hurt me. Or, I could sit down right now and send for all of these booklets which describe in detail these pests and prepare to wage all-out war. After all. the first step is to know your enemy.

And I'm not at all sure I'd recognize a pickleworm. On tile other hand, a more detailed study of all of these menaces could have an adverse effect. I might be afraid to go out into the back yard.
