Wednesday. December 15,1982 5B The Miami News Tom Jicha TV Radio Editor 5 p.m. Another station abandons music for all-talk format 8tret WCBS has finally thrown in the towel on contemporary music as a viable AM radio format. WCBS general manager Dan DiLoreto informed his staff today that the station will switch to news-talk. Feb.

WCBS was the last AM station in South Florida, and one of a dwindling number of major urban stations nationwide, to stick with contemporary adult music. Most AM stations that still play music specialize in country and western, oldies or the big band sound.

The superior, stereo sound on the FM band puts AM stations playing contemporary music at a tremendous disadvantage. Florida's flat terrain magnifies the difference, since FM signals travel farther and with less interference here than in most parts of the country. DiLoreto claimed the superiority of the KM band has created a kind of snob appeal locally. "1 believe we did adult contemporary musicj as well as it can be done in this market, with all our community said. "But there's such an FM bias, people don't want to admit listening to music on AM because it's un-hip.

We found out in our research that WGBS listeners were defensive about listening to AM." DiLoreto offered this prejudice as a partial explanation for WGBS's dismal ratings, which were so low they defied logic. WGBS has 50,000 watts of power, the strongest AM signal in Florida during the day. (At night, it must be turned down to protect New York's WOR. a clear channel station that also broadcasts at 710 on the dial.) DiLoreto said that on his last trip to Epcot, he picked up his station clearly in the Disney World parking lot. Yet in last spring's semi-annual Arbitron ratings, WGBS finished rock bottom among stations that have clear signals in Dade and Broward counties.

The second 1982 rating period ends today, but DiLoreto didn't need to wait for the results to know they would bring more distressing news. "Our research projected the best we could do was between a 1.4 and 2.4 rating." DiLoreto said. Even the optimum number would place WGBS in the lower half of the ratings race. "Our demographics would be good, but we would be perceived as a struggling station," DiLoreto concluded. "It just would not be an intelligent use of our resources to continue what we have been doing." Tune in with the Miami News' Tom Jicha).

Miami 33162. sults of last spring's ratings book hit DiLoreto's desk. "We thought we were doing well from the feedback we were getting," he said, "but not only did we not improve in the ratings. we went backwards." DiLoreto has had discussions with potential talk hosts, but he said no contracts have been signed. Apparently there won't be raids on other local talk stations.

DiLoreto said those under consideration are from out of town. WGBS will become the fourth English-language station in Miami doing talk. WNWS does local talk around the clock, except for news during morning drive. time; WIOD has local talk during the daytime and early evening, and national talk from the NBC network at night; WINZ programs news during the day and talk at night. DiLoreto said his station's format would most closely resemble WINZ's.

"We are going to go very heavily into news." The only qualification DiLoreto is demanding of potential hosts is that they do general, issue-oriented talk. "We are not going to do specialty programming, like how to grow plants or fix your car," he said. Nor will there be a regularly scheduled sports talk show. "We will do sports when it is germane, like the weekend before the Super Bowl, for example." Except for those general guidelines, DiLoreto is open to suggestions. "We're not going in with a philosophic approach.

We're doing this the way a pro football team goes into the draft. We're going to get the best people we can and let them dictate what we talk about." One of those who definitely won't be on WGBS's roster of talk hosts is Doug Carrick, a caustic, abusive talk host who worked at WGBS last year. "If he tried to come back. I would personally meet him at the turnpike and turn him around," said DiLoreto, who confesseed to being embarrassed by Carrick's tone and style. None of the present WGBS on-air personalities will be retained, according to DiLoreto, who said he hopes to place all but a half dozen of the station's 53 employes within the Jefferson-Pilot chain.
