June 6, 1945 THE IRONWOOD TIMES, IRONWOOD, MICHIGAN -HOME- ON THE RANGE Sister Ann Francis and her companion, Sister Olga are arriving from Appleton to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Gamble, 410 East McLeod avenue, Ironwood.

Mr. and Mrs. Adam Mells went to Annapolis, to attend the graduation of their son, Midshipman William Thomas Melis, at the U. S. naval academy.

Mr. and Mrs. Eino Levijoki, Ironwood, are the parents of a daughter, horn May 28. First Sgt. William J.

Babicky arrived from Fort Sheridan, 111., to visit with relatives in Montreal. He has been honorably discharged by the new point-card system. Mr. and Mrs. A.

Malinovski, Ironwood, are the parents of a daughter born May 28. Pvt. William Kleinbrook arrived in Ironwood to spend a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.

C. Kleinbrook, Cloverland drive. Pvt. Kleinbrook completed 15 months of overseas duty in the Italian theatre of war. Helen A.

Salo is in senior cadet training at the army's Hammond general hospital at Modesto, Calif. Leona R. Lahctoe, who has been the assistant postmaster at Marenisco, Michigan, has been appointed Acting Postmaster to serve in the absence of Leo W. Arnestad, postmaster, who is in military service. Mr.

Arnestad is with the Marine Corp and at present is stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Knights of Columbus will elect officers on June 7th. The report of the trip, to Lansing by the Grand Knight, Robert H. Maag, will be heard. All members are urged to be present as there will be election of officers.

Lunch and entertainment will be provided, according to C. H. Simmonds, chairman of program activities. The meeting will be promptly at 8:00 P. M.

Miss Mary Catherine McMahon arrived from Hancock where she underwent an operation. Mrs. Allan Sordyl of Highland Park, 111., is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Hendrickson, Newport.

First Lieutenant and Mrs. Erwin Trethewey and son, went to Nashville, to make their home. Miss Mildred Hannu arrived from Chicago to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hannu, 214 Junell street.

Mrs. Henry Hendrickson of McKinley street returned from Highland Park, 111., where she visited with relatives. Mrs. H. Enebak of Duluth visited with Mr.

and Mrs. P. Santini of Hurley and relatives in Ironwood. Mrs. Joseph Dalpiaz arrived from Pueblo, visit her parents, Mr.

and Mrs. Hugo Loo, Albany street. Miss Helvia Nevala of Milwaukee visited a week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ivar Nevala, Tamarack street.

Mrs. John J. Hein of Gogebic street, returned from Ely, where she visited with her daughter and son in law, Dr. and Mrs. A.

C. McBride. Capt. and Mrs. William A.

Porter are visiting with Mrs. Porter's aunt, Miss Minnie W. Murphy of Shamrock street. Miss Fern Gibbons arrived from Madison where she was graduated from the University of Wisconsin. She was accompanied by her parents, Mr.

and Mrs. Prank Gibbons of Hurley, who attended the exercises. First Lieut. Joseph Lackovich is spending his leave with his wife and son at 448 West Ash street and also with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.

Vinko Lackovich, Bundy street. E. E. Stenrose, WT left for Chicago from where he will proceed to California. Thorwald Johnson of Los Angeles is visiting his mother, Mrs.

J. B. Johnson, Cloverland drive. John Klug of 224 Balsam street was in Rhinelander to attend the funeral of his brother, Herman Klug. Lt.

Frank Goodrich, USNR, and Mrs. Goodrich visited with Mrs. Goodrich's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Benna, West Ayer street.

Cpl. Arnold "Aikola returned to Biggs Field, Texas, after visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Aikola, East Oak street. Pvt.

George Gutt left for the Fort Benjamin General hospital, Harrison, after visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Gutt, 229 Harding avenue. He has recently completed overseas duty in the European theatre of operations where he was wounded. Frank Watts, Merchant Marine, arrived in Ironwood to spend a leave with his uncle and aunt, Mr.

and Mrs. Sherman Cobb, Lowell street. Robert of Ironton, attended the funeral of his brother, Fred Mayheu. John Klug, seaman left for Bremerton, after visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.

John Klug. William Kafka seaman visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A.

Kafka, 114 Poplar street. Pfc, George Champion arrived from the army air field at Harvard, on his way to the photo reconnaissance squadron at Smoky Hill, Salina, Kan. Capt. Eddy Erspamer arrived from Fort Sheridan, 111., to spend a leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.

Leno Erspamer, Hurley. First Lieut. Regina Gus, flight nurse, left for California after spending a week with her mother, Mrs. Mary Gus, 250 West Lime street. Pfc.

George Semenak arrived from Fort Sheridan, 111., to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Semenak. Pfc. Semenak has been honorably discharged from the U.

S. army. Cpl. Floyd Marketti, USMC, of Quantico, visited a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.

Peter Marketti, 310 Bundy street. Jack Dixon, seaman arrived from Camp Endicott, Davisville, R. to spend a leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Davis, Hedin' avenue.

David Moore, A. M. is visiting with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Garvey, and with his uncle and aunt, Mr.

and Mrs. Harold Garvey, Evans street. He has been serving with the navy in the Pacific. Pfc. George Anderson left for Detroit where he will spend a few days with his brother.

He will then report to the Gardner Gen- eral hospital in Chicago. Pfc. Anderson visited his mother, Mrs. Anna Anderson of Larch street. James McKay, seaman left for Great Lakes, 111., after visiting with his parents, Mr.

and Mrs. Belmont McKay, Norrie street. Miss Eileen Marander has returned to Fergus Falls, where she is taking a course at the state hospital. She visited with her mother, Mrs. Florence Marander, Cloverland Drive.

The Ironwood Masonic lodge presented a minstrel show at their clubrooms Friday of last week. Members of the lodge composed the fifteen piece band and the twelve man show. Following the minstrels there was a program of dancing and cards. Members of the Masons and the Eastern Star, and their friends, attended the party. John P.

Collins, son of Mr. Harvey P. Collins, 309 North Lake street, Ironwood, a cook with the 106th infantry division in Germany has been promoted from private first class to corporal. He wears a Battle Star for the campaign in Germany. A Finnish Relief coffee was held at the Kaleva hall on Saturday.

Mrs. Waino Wirtanen, Mrs. Orvo Wirtanen, Mrs. Hjalmer Koskela, Mrs. Ed Erickson, Mrs.

Justina Erickson and Mrs. Henry Hoglund were the hostesses. Among the 185,000 men and women of the Eighth Air Force congratulated by Lt. General James H. Doolittle after V-E day were several from Ironwood.

They were Captain Fillmore, E. Ketola, Captain William G. Fessler, First Lieutenant Delbert Lillrose, Second Lieutenant William R. Champion, Warrant Officer John. H.

Miller, Vernon Becker, Andrew A. Vojcek, Robert J. Kellett, Sgt. Robert J. Keast, Sgt.

Louis C. Parent, Sgt. Paul A. Marander, Sgt. Joseph J.

Schutte, Sgt. William G. Phillips, Cpl. John E. Perkbvich, Opl.

Edward I. Morner, Cpl. Rinar W. Johnson, Pfc. Reino A.

Sievila, Pfc. Nile J. Heikkila, Pfc. Carl S. Vanicky, Pfc.

William A. Aho. Miss Ruth Reid, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Reid, Lawrence Street, Ironwood, has been elected president of the Senior class at the college of St.

Scholastica. Miss Reid is a graduate of St. Ambrose high school, class of 1942. Helen Z. Patek, a student in the freshman year of the, College of Science, Literature arid the Arts, University of Minnesota, was on the Cap and Gown Day honors list for having maintained an average of in all studies taken up to now, including not less than two "quarters" of attendance.

She is the daughter of Mrs. Tillie Patek, Michigan avenue, Ironwood. Chester Zobersky, 18, seaman, second class, USN, of Ironwood, Page Seven is at the amphibious training base, Little Greek, Virginia, training for duty aboard an LSJVT (landing ship, The new type vessel on which Zobersky will serve was developed especially for Pacific duty, and has been in action against the Japanese since the. opening of the Philippine campaign last October. Zobersky attended the L.

L. Wright high school before joining the Navy in October, 1944. His brother, Ray, is overseas with the army. They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs.

Felix Zobersky, 45 Aurora Location. Mary Catherine Maag, arrived from Rosary College to spend the summer with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. H.

Maag. John Sabol, who resigned from the Ironwood City Commission when he entered the Seabees a year ago, has advanced to the rank of storekeeper, third class, and is serving at a construction depot somewhere in the Pacific area. Sgt. Ted Drazkowski arrived in Ironwood from Orlando, Florida, to visit with his wife and baby. Max Miller has arrived from Detroit to spend two weeks vacation with his parents, Mr.

and Mrs. Ben Miller. Richard Banfielcf, 519 North Lake street, Ironwood, found one- half inch of ice in the bird bath in his flower garden on June 4, 1945. Another family, here on the range, is growing its tomato plants in the bathtub. Other "gardeners" have a number of ingenious methods to make certain that their victory gardens will produce a bumper 1945 crop.
