7A The Nmws Monday, October 11 1982 Tom Jicha This TV Radio Editor New anchor says reporting needs the human touch Barbara Sloan has had to make a number of adjustments to prepare to become Channel 6's news anchor a week from tonight. Not the least is the definition of news. For the past 2 years, Sloan, 31, has been the anchor at WFBC-TV in Greenville, S.C. Not only would a murder top the newscast, there would be followups like "How could this happen here?" Sloan said. In Miami, homicides frequently don't even make the news budget. Sloan doesn't anticipate that the transition from the relative tranquillity of South Carolina to the frequently insane environment in South Florida will be that difficult, but she doesn't want to become jaded in the process. "I imagine I'll adjust pretty quickly, but I don't ever want to lose sight of what life is all about. I don't want to get to the stage where I accept a homicide as commonplace." The decisions of what will and won't make Channel 6's newscast is out of her hands, anyway.

News director Dick Descutner calls those shots. "I know that my input is welcome, but I don't have a veto power or anything," Sloan said. "I don't think as a new person I should." Another indication that Sloan has a well-controlled ego is the fact that she isn't certain whether she's the first solo woman anchor at a major market station. She suspects she might be, but it has never seemed important enough to her to make the effort to find out. "If it's true, 1 think that's great." she said.

"Maybe it indicates that the sex of a person doing this kind of job is mattering less and less. Maybe just the person matters." That was true in her case. Descutner said he wasn't looking for an anchor when Sloan's talents came to his attention. A WFBC reporter applying for a job at Channel 6 sent a sample of his work, and Descutner was impressed by what he saw of Sloan on the tape. The reporter didn't get the job, but Descutner convinced Sloan, a former reporter at WPTV in West Palm Beach, that she should return to South Florida.

Soon after she was hired, an executive at another local station remarked that he, too, had been aware of Sloan's work and that WCIX had made a fine catch. To appreciate the significance of that concession, you have to understand that the color of the day, in TV news, is green. Without prodding, backup weekend anchors will volunteer a litany of Walter Cronkite's shortcomings. Channel 6 has followed Channel 10's lead in introducing its new anchor to the market. Just as Mike Schneider did before becoming Ann Bishop's partner on Channel 10, Sloan has spent her first few weeks in town as an on-the-street reporter.

One of her assignments, covering the preparations for this week's American Society of Travel Agents convention, turned out to be valuable and pleasant. fAgfl The New York School This documentary examines the arts of the 1940's and 50's, a time when American artists Barbara Sloan will take over as the Channel 6 news anchor a week from tonight "Being a new person in town and seeing things for the first time myself, I found it interesting to see things as they will." Sloan, a University of Florida graduate, said her specialty in South Carolina was human-interest stories and she hopes to continue handling them at Channel 6. "I'm sure there is plenty of territory to cover here in that said. It will probably be more difficult finding air time for such stories than finding the stories themselves. Half of Channel 6's hour news is turned over to the syndicated Independent Network News report, and the remaining half must accommodate weather, sports and stock market reports in addition to the crowded agenda of hard news.

Sloan said the tight structure will challenge her to come up with human-interest stories that have an impact on the people watching. "If I can do that," she said, "I think there will be room for them." The fact that Channel 6 is about to change ownership doesn't faze her. "I'm coming from a station in transition, so I know there are some things that happen when one owner is on the way out and another owner is on the way in. I think that since it's happening as I'm arriving, I'll see some of the benefits." Just in case, she demanded and received a three-year contract, making her one of the few staffers at Channel 6 to enjoy such security. "This is a perilous business," Sloan said, "so I felt that having something on paper is the only way to go." Mrs.
