He was discharged only six months ago after serving a four-year "hitch" as a boatswain's mate, general seaman. During his stay in Burlington he lived with an aunt -and uncle. Mr. and Mrs. J.

N. Ilkenhons, and was employed as an electrician by the Burlington Railroad. Shaw missed combat during his previous four years in the Navy but the experience of being torpedoed, came long before he donned the Navy uniform. His mother and 11-year-old sister were killed when a German submarine sank the boat they were on in the Caribbean sea eight years ago. His father died of exposure on a life raft before rescue boats arrived.

Young Shaw and another sister, Carol, now of Detroit, were saved. He recalled that his mother and sister went down with the ship which sank in 90 seconds and that the submarine surfaced and machine-gunned passengers who had taken to life rafts. The Shaw family was aboard a cargo ship en route to the United States on furlough from French Equatorial Africa where the Rev. and Mrs. Harvey Shaw had served as Baptist missionaries.

(INS)--The 500th polio patient admitted to the State University of Iowa hospitals since January entered the polio ward heie last Saturday, hospital officials said today. With two months remaining and with cases still being admitted daily, the 1950 total may rise near the 600 mark. The increase over last year's figure indicates that University hospitals are handling a greater num- ber of Iowa's polio patients than previously, officials pointed out.
