BILL HOLLYWOOD The Evil Prosper: Or, Lying Can Be Fun I've found a new backer for an independent picture I'm. putting together. A marvelous man with a lovely wife. Socially conscious, honest and interesting people.

They have invited us to their house, taken us out to dinner, and hosted us at their New Year's Eve The time came for us to entertain and it wasn't looking easy. We are not wealthy. What we are is broke. (I'm not working again.) Our house is semi-failing down because neither my wife nor I do anything but the bare necessities to keep it up. Worst of all, if we were rich we still wouldn't know how to be elegant.

We never entertain more than, one couple at a time and then I barbeque. The salad is prepared in advance and still we have a hard time serving and getting settled. This time, we- thought, it might be fun to have several people people in the motion picture business the same night we hosted our backer and his wife.

I invited Henry and Peggy Koster and Maurice and Melanie Marsac. Koster is the director who did "The Robe," "Harvey," "A Man Called Peter'" and 98 other famous films. Marsac is a well-known French actor. They are lively, bright, vital people who are al, ways "on." A downing two a a tans one later night, I thought it might be nice to ask still another couple. No one was home except my son, sleeping in his bedroom.

I called Jack Smith, that other columnist. Makes Contact Smith has become a sort of pen pat of my wife. She most of the writing I think 7000 letters so far and she has received six or seven cards or notes in return. The a n't be exact because she keeps them locked in a vault and I don't know the combination.) I recalled that Melanie Marsac and the backer's wife were also avid fans of Jack's. One afternoon during a visit with the Mar- sacs.

had told them that my wife met Jack at a book fair. He had given me a map. drawn on a napkin, to his house in Baja. Melanie almost fainted. She pleaded with me to 1ell what, he looked like, how old he was.

etc. Even Maurice showed signs of i si, but Melanie wouldn't let him open his mouth. At one point he got so agitated trying to get a word in that he threw his whole glass of rwri into the air and it spilled to the floor in one big drop, not even separa- ling. a feat hard to duplicate. Since the Msrsac's have acres in Baja.

1 turned over 1he map to them and included a set of my own columns. (I've been jealous of Smith for 7000 pages.) Jack was pleasant on the telephone but declined my dinner invitation, saying he had 10 get down to Raja that, weekend. He assured me should he elect not to go Bsja. he would phone. The next morning my on told me 1 had called him through of the con- i "Spariacus" was on television that night maybe it.

was three The night of the dinner arrived and I put ten Cornish game hens on two borrowed barbeques. The guests arrived at once and the evening looked like it was going to be a good one. Introductions were hazy, due to my inability to handle large situations, but drinks flowed and everybody gabbed, including Gabby, an extra person brought by the Kosters, and my who wasn't supposed to be there. When I finally got the hens off the spit, everybody was seated and having a good time, all broken into little groups, talking, a i drinking and laughing. The backer was sitting next to Melanie deep in conversation.

Launch Hoax On impulse, I leaned over and told Melanie that the backer was really Jack Smith. He went along with it and so did his wife. Melanie referred first to the backer's wife as Mrs. Smith and, then, chummily as Denny (Mrs. Smith's first name.) a 1 ked about Jack's column, his house in Mexico, Gomez, his future plans, his new book "Smith on Wry," and how he happened to be at the Mahan's instead of going to Mexico.

When the party broke up and Melanie left she was still 'calling the backer "Jack." I read in Jack's column last Sunday that he hadn't gone to Mexico' after all. He stayed home and watched football. Live and let live, what the hell. He was there in spirit, anyway, and my backer now wants to write a column. Capsule Reviews Cont.

from Preceding Pnjjc they have risen above men and run the wars. Of course, now we're talking generally, not just special women. I think the handwriting is on the wall. We have a female President of Israel, Golda Meir, and a female premier of India, Indira Gandi. Do you think we'll have a female president? A Yes.

Martha Mitchell, for instance? A Of course. She must have something in mind. Martha is Spiro Agnew in pantyhose. How did you happen to create your A I used to go on television with no makeup. One day, I saw myself.

Oh God! But it did give- a kind of homespun appearance? A Oh, it worked for a while, but then I got sick of it. But it got me started looking terrible. Don't women identify with you. It made you popular? A a they thought a loser like me made them a winner. Which is the most stimulating: TV, movies or performing live? A Well, there's no stimulation -whatever in TV and movies.

In movies, there's absolutely none; in TV there's some; in live, there's all. What do you think of current fashions? A Boy, are they going through a transition! a i on has switched from tbe thing I created: the no-belt look was for my people, my women, those who never close the refrigerator door. My theory was that if you put belt on, you might as well a a a e-m easure around your middle. Tell everybody you're 35, 40, right? Well, today we've been ro-oked, my dear. The new look is for the skinny, cute body.

You either have to be young or have a young body. You can't have a waist exceeding 25 inches to look good in knickers, the midi, or the maxi. I have a full-length Chinchilla maxi-coat at home. I was the first one who wore a maxi on the streets of New York, and I don't have to tell you why. My uniform is nothing but a Miss Manhattan shirt, a drip-dry white shirt.

It's made to order for me. because of the rot- igure slippers because my feet hurt. HOW dn you really wear your hair? A A fright wig over my hair. I'm setting my hair under this hood. I've been wearing hflods for 17 years and now they're "in." Dog collars are "in" too.

Of rmjrsc, I wasn't in pood health lo begin with. you diet? A Yes. I went on loday. I've got to get waistline again. How much do you weigh? A I weigh 120 pounds, but that has nothing to do with it.

But you're thin. A No, no, no! I'm flnf- fy! I have to exercise and diet. I'm on weight-watchers. Did you cultivate your tough? A No, a natural laugh. 1 Ihink if it were cultivated, it would he most repulsive sound in the world.

It wonld really detract if it wasn't natural. There's something wonderful about truth, von know. KCET Quits Contest for Channel 58 Educational television station KCET has withdrawn from the battle to obtain a license to operate Channel 58, the only unassigned UJ-IF channel left in a major metropolitan area.
