camps probably will be a session Big Game ft a V- ore's Hoir io Figure Out Ball Averages By BEN OLAN NEW YORK You have to be a master mathematician to figure baseball averages All It takes is the knack of knowing what to figure with the figures Take least Involved and more interesting of the statistical tables the batting average By dividing the number of times Into the number of you can arrive at a batting mark For example Stan Musial collects 20 hits in 60 trips to the plate Divide 60 into 20 and you will find average is 333 Actually Musial has made one hit in every three appearances The slugging average also can be figured along these lines Ralph Kiner hits a double and a single (three total bases) in five times at bat Divide -the at bats (5) into the total bases (3) and slugging average for the game Is 600C The same system can be used for 20 100 or 154 game records In figuring batting and slugging averages you give the player the benefit of the fractions average for example might read 3345 when carried out to Jour places His average would be listed as 335 Fielding averages are a bit more involved To get a fielding average you must divide the number of chances offered into the number of chances accepted Futouts assists and errors come under the heading of chances offered Errors are the missed chances Take a theoretical case Phil fielding record shows 150 putouts 40 assists and 10 errors His chances offered then are 200 and his chances accepted (cleanly) are 190 Divide 200 into 190 and find figure is 950 There are several Statistical tables available which give batting and fielding averages at a glance' However most of them only go as high as 600 at bats (or chances) necessitating the calculation of at least team percentages by hand Computing a earned run average is somewhat more difficult Allie Reynolds has allowed 50 earned runs in 150 innings To get his correct ERA the earned runs are multiplied by nine (innings) making it 450 Then the innings pitched (150 are divided into that total Hence Reynolds earned run rating is 300 There have been no books published which give you the earned run listings first hand 4- Thirty-nine playeri who of the Chicago White Sox and St Louis Browns The constantly revamping White Sox have made deals since the 1952 campaign involving 15 players got five men coming from other teams and ten going The Browns have done almost as much shuffling with eight new faces to replace five bartered to other teams The Browns incidentally were the first to get spring rehearsals under way opening camp last Thursday at San Bernardino Calif And first on hand to greet Manager Marty Marion was Virgil (Fire) Trucks veteran right-handed pitcher who figured in one of the biggest deals with the Detroit Tigers one month eld when this likeable Ogden youngster found himself smack In the middle ef the fireworks bowling was of course the one thing he probably give any thought to but then he might have at that because yea see he learned how to bowl In the Ogden City Recreation bowling school and it was only a few short months before that he was a regular member of the school so possible our hero might have had a longing thought or two about the good old bowling days back home However Fm certain he think he was going to be a bowling champion in the then very uncertain future Bat what happened Here Dan Stuart Jr 21-year-old Swift Company employee wins the first annual Hoffman Dry Cleaners 165 average and under handicap singles event Dan outbowled a field of 127 competitors and for his victory was awarded $15000 in cash and a beautiful trophy and believe me friends it happen to a nicer guy It could be mentioned too that the tournament was a howling success and very proud to have my name associated with this fine event which promises to he a major event In the coming years There is also much drama about another championship which was won in the 2nd annual Inter-Fraternal tournament Between the years 1933 and 1941 the same Jack Earl was much and feared in intermountain bowling circles than business made it necessary for Jack to abandon his bowling activities so now after a TEN-YEAR LAY-OFF the old maestro returns with much of his cunning and know-how and bowls a mighty 683 series to win the Fraternal singles title as well as the much coveted All-Events title The Colonel deserves title for the greatest come-back bowler of the year Rulon Kofoed Pres of the keglers gave me the results ef the 5th annual Inter-Depot 5-man team championship For the 2nd consecutive year boys won the team title over the HOI Field Navy and Arsenal Depots Each of the above leagues select the high twenty men to represent their respective organizations and the total plnfall with handicap Clipping experiments are one of the many studies being fused on' deer ranges By setting plots on deer forage areas and then clipping the game food plants to simulate deer browsing you can find the allowable use or difference between maintaining a plant or killing it out Generally the heavier a plant is browsed the weaker it becomes Mountain mahogany is a favorite winter food for deer Among the study projects in operation by the Forest Service is a browse utilization trabsect on the Oak Creek deer winter range of the Fishlake National Forest in Idaho In an open winter like this one the native ranges will supply the food necessary for game if hunting has kept the herd in balance with its food supply The Forest Service wildlife research men work jointly with members of the Fish and Wildlife Service and the state game departments Their iind-ings thus become tools for forest rangers and state game managers to better understand wildlife requirements 4 Another of the many questions involved in land management is: much of do deer At Utah State Agricultural College in Logan studies are maintained on experimental deer feeding and results of the studies are applied in game ranges by forest rangers to balance production with the natural food requirements for all animals using the area Ail factual information from game studies is used by rangers usch as Ranger Anderson and by state valued elk herds in a health hunt-able condition One phase of elk management is close study of their summer rangelands to see that jdesirable forage plants are maintained in balance with the' number of animals in each herd This is another in a series of articles dealing with the diversified job of the Forest Ranger Here on the Cache National Forest as elsewhere in the United States the Forest 'Ranger has a little bit of everything to do) To get reliable information study plots have been established One such plot is on Big Game Ridge in the Teton National Forest in Wyoming It is a cooperative study by the Forest Service and the Wyoming state game department Their objective is to maintain a healthy watershed by keeping the soil in place and proper use of the vegetative cover Deer Widely Honted Speaking of big game there are mule? deer on every ranger district in the Intermountain region As a consequence deer are more widely hunted than any other big game animal It is important to local people and to visitors in the region that' these deer herds be maintained but at the same time it is important that they are not allowed to override the amount of natural range available to them rangers keep-close tab on these herds and the condition of their natural feeding areas By working closely with state game employes they make it their business to know where the deer are their condition and the condition of the range for use at any season of the year By knowing these things the game managers are in a position to recommend hunting quotas to the State Big Game
