as WTV.I or WPLG, the same folks associate certain programs with ESPN, USA and CNN, for example. Leider feels it's only a matter of time before call letters replace numbers entirely, and that WSVN is getting the jump on the competition. Nonetheless, Leider swallowed hard the other night when Susan Jaramillo, owner of Channel 39, informed him matter-of-factly at a party that she intended to put in a bid for WCKT. Leider laughs at the expression that must have been on his face. "When she saw my reaction, she added right away that she was only kidding," he said.

The change will be an expensive miscalculation if it doesn't produce the desired results. Leider estimates the station will have spent as much as a half-million dollars by the time the final bill is paid. Ten per cent of that went in the surreptitious ploy that moved the call letters from Virginia to South Florida. For Channel 7 to get them, the Roanoke station had to abandon them and put them up for grabs. That cost Channel 7 $10,000.

When Channel 7's bid for WSVN was approved, Leider had to fork over another $40,0130. Then there's $100,000 for billboard advertising, an extensive campaign in trade papers, the cost of relabeling everything from the station's helicopter to its letterhead stationery, and a promotional bash at pricy Grove Isle last night. As confident as he is that he's making the right move, there are moments when Leider has second thoughts whether it's all worthwhile. One came the other day when someone called his office to congratulate him on the switch. "I think becoming WSVN is a terrific idea," the caller said.

Then he added, "By the way, what are your call letters now?" I SP 1 117Aj Starcade 10 p.m. Run, Rebecca, Run A brave young girl and a desperate fugitive are thrown together on a deserted Island. The atmosphere around Channel 7 the last few days has been as giddy as the home of a bride on the eve of her marriage. Tomorrow at 7 a.m.. Channel 7 changes its name, and from 411 the the way some of the sta- tion's personnel are acting, you'd 74 think they were marrying into money. IC ha In the executive suites, it makes no difference that, like a bride, only the name will be different. Otherwise, Channel 7 will be the same tomorrow as it is today.

From General Manager Bob Leider on down, no one wants to hear that a viewer who skipped "Hill Street Blues" when the station was WCKT is unlikey to watch the show on WSVN, which Channel 7 becomes tomorrow. Leider is convinced he has pulled the coup of the century in grabbing his new call letters from a Roanoke, public television outlet, and officials from the NBC network have done nothing to contradict that belief. NBC chief executive Grant Tinker sent a note congratulating on his "shrewd move." The network's wizard of promotion, Steve Sohmer, chipped in his congratulations. Johnny Carson has promised to mention the switch on "The Tonight Show," and Willard Scott is expected to note the new call letters on "The Today Show." Sohmer, according to Leider, has advised all NBC affiliates that it would be forward-thinking to stress station call letters in promotional material. The theory is that as cable's penetration grows, stations won't always be in their numerical place on the new technology's converter boxes.

By scoffing up WSVN all you have to do. an animated promotion points out, is remove two E's the station can retain its billing as "South Florida Seven." With only a third of the counry wired, the impact of cable is already being felt.
