Festivities Attend Denver Opening of 'Stagecoach 1 By ALI SAR DENVER A Pony Ex- pi-ess rider carrying a Winchester galloped up to the Capitol steps where Colorado Gov. John Love, out-of- town guests, movie stars and spectators were gathered. When he was about to present the rifle to this state's chief executive, somebody from the crowd shouted, it Hold '-He was the director of a documentary crew which was recording on celluloid all the activities surrounding the world premiere of Martin Rackin's 20th Century-Fox film "Stagecoach." The documentary film crew always was present filming the three-day long festivities step by step. The cameras recorded "Stagecoach" stars -Van Heflin fishing at the picturesque Caribou Ranch, Alex Cord shooting at the Winchester Skeet Club, Bob Cummings piloting a two- engine aircraft, Slim Pickins riding a horse in the parade in downtown Denver, Red Buttons clowning with the public, Michael Connors "leaping" from a tall building in "Hollywood style." Oh yes, there was Ann-Margret, too. But she didn't have to do anything extraordinary. They just kept shooting her walking, smiling, talking in various outfits.

More than 150 newsmen from all corners of the globe the "Stagecoach" premiere were "cast" as extras in the documentary "and we, too, had to watch for our cues as we interviewed the stars, ate elk meat or boarded planes. FILM CONCERT -MIKE MARTH, Tempo Editor Speaking of flying, as our daring pilot us in a sight-seeing tour over the snow-encrusted Rockies, he announced, "We'll fly up to see the rockpile." Apologetically adding on the intercom, "I might sound a little bit corny, but I'm basically a pilot, not a commentator." Predicts Success His passengers replied, "We hope so." The festivities climaxed with the showing of the western epic in Denver's Centre Theatre, followed by a gala champagne ball. Producer Martin Rackin assured the audience of 1200, some of them paying as much as $250 per seat, that "the remake of 'Stage- Trio to Report Indy 500 Three top auto-racing announcers will cover MCA TV's closed-circuit telecast of the Golden Jubilee Indianapolis 500-Mile Race Classic Monday. The trio consists of Charlie Brockman, Chris Econo- maM and Sam Hanks. Brockman will be the chief announcer and actually call the race from start to finish.

He has been associated with the "500" for many years and is sports director for WLW-TV in Indianapolis. Economaki, a leading racing writer and expert, will report action in the pits. Hanks, Indianapolis great who won the 1957 Classic, will add -color to the event by commenting from the standpoint of a driver. Area theaters slated to show telecast include -iGrauman's Chinese, Hollywood; Alex Theatre, Glendale; El Portal, North Hollywood; Cornell, Burbank and Valley Music Theatre, Woodland" Hills. Filmed and premiered in Colorado, "Stagecoach" will roll to the theatres in Southland around mid-June. Plan Gala Bow Tomorrow for New Whifeman Stadium Whiteman Stadium, the new $500,000 racing and show grounds facility at 12850 Pierce Pacoima, tomorrow will celebrate its grand opening with ceremonies beginning at 7 p.m. Traditional flag raising and ribbon cutting will be followed by a Grand Parade. Councilman i Nowell, other city officials and Hollywood personalities will be presented in a brief program emceed by disc jockey Johnny Grant Slated for showing in the parade are extraordinary cars such as the 1966 Excalibur SS and the Futuristic Turbosonic Show car. The evening's race program features PRA super- stock cars competing in eight events.
