6B The Miami News Tuesday, November 21, 1978 Movie Review Bill von Maurer Neighborhood Movie Clock 'Halloween' packs a few shivers in with cliches Haddonfieid, 111., Is a right nice little town. Wall-to-wall kids; door-to-door station wagons. Too bad about that Meyer kid down the street, however. His name Is Michael and he's only 6. It didn't go over too big in Haddonfieid when he stabbed his half-nude sister to death on Halloween night, von 1936.

That's the setting for "Halloween," If occurs to her to switch on every light in the house. That's what most of us would have done, but perhaps they do things differently In Haddonfieid. She does have the presence of mind to sta her stalker in the neck with a knitting needle, something she never would have had on hand If she ever had a date, so there's something to be said for being a wallflower. The only problem is that Michael just won't stay dead. And nobody in the picture explains that, although Pleasence hints at the answer.

Behind Michael's eyes, he says, is missing the essence of evil in a brain that knows not reason, -conscience, right or wrong. Taken on its own level, "Halloween" is a terrifying movie if you are the right age and in the right mood. Of course, the producers are somewhat tardy in their release date. A movie titled "Thanksgiving," on second thought, wouldn't have been scary at all. Michael would have looked silly carving up a turkey.

Laurie looks like Lauren Bacall, but she can't get a i date and spends her time piling up a bankroll by babysitting. Dateless as usual on Halloween night, she gathers up a pumpkin to make a jack-o-lantern, pops up a mess of popcorn and is off to a neighbor's for another evening of television, reading stories to her tiny charges and staring out the window at the house across the street.

She gets a little uneasy when she notices a figure lurking outside the neighbor's house. She shrugs it off and that's her mistake. The escaped psychopath on a creepy prowl is old-hat movie stuff, but the director of "Halloween" has managed to put a shiver or two into the cliche that will delight young audiences. Doors creak, bodies fall out of closets and shadows appear menacingly, all old stuff. But these things are handled so adroitly in "Halloween" that the matinee audience shrieked right on cue and worked itself into a state of excitement, shouting back at the screen and often giggling at the way they were being manipulated.

No doubt, that's what the director was aiming for. While Laurie is being stalked by the killer in a two-story, beautifully furnished home, it never ingly good thriller of the "The-bogeyman-will-get-you-if-you-don't-watch-out" genre. As a matter of fact, Michael is the bogeyman, but you'll have to wait and have Donald Pleasence explain that to you. Pleasence, looking a bit barmy himself, plays the doctor who has been treating Michael for 15 years since his childhood crime and getting nowhere. But when Michael escapes from the Illinois State Mental Hospital, Pleasence knows where he is heading.

Haddonfieid where else? The time is Halloween again, 1978. The story begins to focus on a girl named Laurie, a high car's instantly recognizable radiator grille for use as a watch crystal. It comes in white 18-karat gold, for men or women. Be sure to remove, the $4,500 price tag before you drop the timely gift into the stocking. What the disco-kid- is wearing this time of the year: Red and white satin baseball jacket over matching knit shirt and satin basketball shorts.
