After completing a series of routine observations of several variable stars, Rev. Hodgson decided to sweep some of the night sky with binoculars before closing his observatory. As he did so the thought crossed his mind that it might be rather exciting to discover a comet. Within a few moments, after a quick sweep of the star fields of Cygnus, he directed his attention to the constellation ot Delphinus, which is fairly well knowr to him. Almost immediately he was struck by a conspicuous fuzzy object with a small bright nucleus, on the border between Delphinus and Vul- pecula.

Rev. Hodgson could hardly believe his eyes. Although many comets have tails, this sighting had no discernable tail. Another possibility might be a star cluster of nebula, but there were none that bright in that part of the he'cpuld remember. A quick examination of star charts made it clear that the fuzzy object was indeed a comet.

During the next 2Vz hours the comet was carefully tracked, and Its rapid motion became immediately apparent as it moved on a north- northwesterly course into Vutpecula. It is unusual to find a comet so far away from the sun In the sky. Preliminary analysis of Its motion suggests that it is presently outside the orbit of the earth, and is probably still approaching the sun. At present it is about 7.0 magnitude-just a little too faint to be seen with the naked eye, but it may continue to brighten. Its rapid motion suggests that it is moderately close to the earth.

He communicated the informatlor concerning this comet to the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams at the Smithsonian Astrophyslcal Observatory, Cambridge, Massachusetts for evaluation. After making the discovery. Rev. Hodgson began searching through literature he has received in recent Wednesday, July 23, 1975 The Sioux Center News Page 3 weeks to find out whether this comet had been reported earlier. A number, of comets hid been reported, but all of them, with one exception, were much too faint.

The exception, howJJ ever, is Interesting. On July 2 Toru Kobayashi of Japan discovered a moderately bright comet in the more southern constellation of Aquaxius which moves fairly rapidly in a northerly direction. Rev. Hodgson believes that it is quite possible that the comet he observed may be that i Kobayashi found 12 days earlier. The matter is now under further study.

For those who wish to observe the comet with binoculars In the next few days, one should look In north-central Vulpecula south-central Cygnus. Since the comet's orbit around the sun has not been determined, more precise predictions of its position in the sky cannot be given at this time. Clarence E. Martin new superintendent at N.W. Iowa Tech The Northwest Iowa Technical College board of directors, meeting In regular session in Sheldon July 16, selected Clarence F.

Martin to sue- ceed Daniel McPherson as Superintendent of the college. Martin, who has Been serving as Director of Adult Education for the past seven years, will assume the position of chief administrative officer of the college on August 1. The Board received notification of the granting of a ten-year accredita- tion of ihe institution by the State Board of Education and the State Board of Regents. The accreditation follows a comprehensive self study and examination visit which were conducted during the past year. The Board endorsed a proposed cooperative effort with Northwestern and Dordt Colleges which could result in NITC providing agricultural courses for students of the two neighboring colleges.
