MK' I ''I tf' it I i 7 031' 1l Chess-title rivals do have similarities Rtuliri Ntwi Servlct REYKJAVIK The world chess championship has captured imaginations around the globe more for its clash of personalities than for the exquisite tactical struggles expected the chessboard.

Psychology and personality are often more vital factors in chess than in more physical sports though physical training to build up endurance and concentration is as important in the seemingly cerebral game as in any other. The often bizarre preliminaries to this championship have focussed unprecedented attention on the volatile challenger, 29-year-old Bobby Fischer, and the apparently poised champion, 35-year-old Boris Spassky. In addition a unique clash of cultures if not politics is underlined by the long grip of Soviet players on the world title and by Fischer's past criticisms of the Russians. But the apparent differences in the two ne men's present personalities mask intriguing similarities in their progress toward their places today at the center of an attention unparalleled in the game. Both are tall, physically fit men who take care to stay in shape through sports.

Both were born of Jewish mothers Fischer in Chicago of a German father and Spassky in Leningrad of a Russian father. Like many grandmasters, both learned chess early Spassky at five and Fischer at six though it was a few years before either began to become really interested in the game. Both emerged as prodigies in their teens, and later went through rough patches before they could fully harness their extraordinary talents. Fischer was American champion at the age of 14 and at 15 became the world's youngest international grandmaster. Ity Drug-Coral Gables MP A MM A AA it mI Urn UC IK 1 AiiAu lulu 1 I Tl Cki v'f fi r.

EVANS Reuters Newt Service WASHINGTON The State Department said yesterday the U.S. government had in some ways assisted the Marxist government of Chilean President Salvador Allende.

But department spokesman Charles Bray did not specifically deny a report that the International Telephone and Telegraph Corp. had suggested the United States work to bring about the downfall of Allende. Bray, asked to comment on a story in The New York Times yesterday that ITT had written to a senior White House aide to enlist Nixon administration support, said the United States had agreed to help the Chilean govern ment get out from under its heavy foreign debt burden. The New York Times story said that ITT Vice President William Merriam wrote to then White House aide Peter Peterson Oct. 1, 1971, outlining an 18-point plan to ensure the Marxist leader's downfall.

It was said to be concerned about its large investments in Chile. The ITT plan called for economic warfare against Chile, with assistance from the CIA, the report said. A spokesman for Peterson, now secretary of Commerce, confirmed that he met with ITT leaders, but said that ITT had not pressed for any specific U.S. moves toward Chile. CALL 24-t733 FOR APPOINTMENT Peterson did not reply to a letter from Merriam because he did not feel a reply was necessary.

Bray said the U.S. government had moved to block international credit to Chile from the Export-Import Bank, the World Bank, and the Inter-American bank, under its policy of not advocating development credit to nations which did not adequately compensate private firms they nationalized. But, Bray added, the U.S. had agreed with the Chilean government to negotiate the rescheduling of payments on the Chilean public debt. He declared, 'i think the facts of the matter speak for themselves.
