Buckingham Palace announced that the duke died in his sleep at Barnwell Manor, his country home in Northamptonshire. The 72- year-old duchess was at Barnwell when he died. He served as a professional soldier until 1944 when he went to Australia as governor general and commander in chief. He held that post until 1947, then returned to take up the round appearances and duties customary for a member of the British royal family, The duke's oldest brother, the Duke of Windsor, who reigned for six months in 1936 as King Edward VIII, died in May, 1972. His brother, King George VI, the father of the present queen, died 20 years earlier, and a younger brother, the Duke of Kent, was killed in a Royal Air Force, crash in August, 1942. 2 p.m. "THE RIVERSIDE" 16480 NE 19th Ave. Interment Lakeside Memorial Park. -Associated Press Wirephoto TWO ROLES OF KATHARINE CORNELL: "Lovers and Friends" (1943) and "The Dark is Not Enough" (1955). Katharine Cornell, 81, dies of pneumonia ia Associated Press VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass.

For decades, audiences applauded the dazzling performances of Katharine Cornell. "Romeo Juliet" and "'The Barretts of Wimpole Street" were among her triumphs. The American National Theater and Academy recently cited her "incomparable acting ability and her theatrical genius" and said she had "elevated the theater throughout the world." Miss Cornell became ill May 29 at her town house in New York City and was flown to Martha's Vineyard at her request Yesterday, the actress who had brought so much excitement to the theater died of pneumonia at her home here. She was 81. Her body will be cremated in Boston tomorrow and a memorial service will be held next week in Vineyard Haven's town hall.

The raven hair, throaty voice and facial features that gave her a mystical Oriental aura cast her in a sequence of "other woman" roles until 1931 when she formed her own production company. With "Katharine Cornell Presents" on theater signs, she staged "The Barretts of Wimpole Street" a romantic success that she revived five times on stage and once in a rare television performance. Triumphs followed in "Candida," "Romeo and Juliet" and "Saint Joan." Miss Cornell initiated theater decentralization with a repertory tour. "Touring on the grand scale was pioneering at that time," she wrote in her autobiography, "I Wanted to Be an Actress." "Except for a few key cities in the East, the road was dead." During World War II. Miss Cornell took "Barretts" to servicemen abroad and was awarded a 5th Army plaque for outstanding service.

Her husband, Guthrie McClintic directed all but one of her plays. After he died in 1961, she retired from the stage. Bond-sale request put at $104 4 million By MORTON LUCOFF Miami News Reporter County Manager Ray Goode today recommended that $104 million in bonds be sold in the fiscal year beginning in October, with the largest the monies, $28.8 million designated for major street improvement projects. This would be the second sale of the 1972-approved $553.1 million decade of progress bond issue. Last July, $66 million in bonds were sold.

The Metro Commission will have to vote on approval of the sale. The commission has pledged to set priorities on spending the bond proceeds after holding public hearings. Coupled with the previous bond sale, Goode is recommending for 1974-75 a tax rate of 75 cents for every 000 of property evaluation to pay the debt service on the bonds. His other suggestions on spending monies from the $104 million bond sale include: $18.7 million for health care facilities $18.3 million for sanitary sewers $9.5 million for incinerators and a recycling plant for disposal of solid waste $1.1 million for acquisition of 110 new buses $8.6 million for new libraries $3.3 million for 190 acres of new park land and park development $3.5 million for animals, design and facilities and site development for a zoological park to be built at site of old" Richmond Naval Air Station. Goode said he feels this program for the second bond sale is one that's, been "soundly planned well.

conceived." street-improvement program includes upgrading 14 miles of arterial street lighting within municipalities; construction of a new west 4-lane bridge on the Rickenbacker Causeway that will double the capacity of the roadway near the toll booths; construction of the Miami Gardens Drive overpass at the Seaboard Railroad and modernizing traffic signals at 250 Goode said that of the proposed $18.7 million for health-care facilities, the largest single expenditure will be $6 million for the completion of the 14-story, 370-bed west wing at Jackson Memorial Hospital. This is scheduled to be finished by the Fall of 1975. Another $5 million is recommended for six additional floors at the Rehabilitation Building in the JMH complex. In the library bond sale, Goode is advising that the money be spent to build three regional libraries in North, West and South Cade, EYE SORES a sub-regional library in Northeast Dade and branch libraries in Kendall and in Model City. The $18.3 million proposed for sanitary sewers, Goode said, represents the local matching funds for $86 million in federal funds committed by the U.S.

Environmental Protection Agency. The federal and county money is scheduled to be used to build a 60-milliongallon-a-day regional sewage treatment plant on the Interama property and a 100-million-gallon-a-day ocean outfall emanating from the Interama plant. Also included is the money for doubling the capacity of a 55-million-gallon-a-day treatment at Virginia Key and extension of its ocean outfall from 4,600 feet to 18,000 feet offshore. The solid waste funds would be used to build a 000-ton-per-day transfer 'station at the City of Miami incinerator site at NW 20th Street and 12th Avenue which would allow that facility to be closed; design and construct and operate a 400- ton-per-day operation at the closed site of the Coral Gables incinerator and design, construction anu operation by private industry a solid waste resource recovery plant at the county landfill site off the Palmetto Expressway and NW 58th St. Miami News Staff Photo by BOB MACK LOCATION: SW 72nd Avenue and 47th Street.
