He then announced that quarterback Tagge and defensive end Harper were the game's most valuable back and lineman, respectively. Again more cheers. "On behalf of the Orange Bowl we want to thank you for giving us the best game we've had and the best game played today. Beyond a doubt you deserve to be the No. 1 team in the country." I think we deserve it we've worked so hard this year. And I think upstairs they think we're No. 1, too." Harper, a sophomore, wasn't worried that a national championship might put more pressure on the Cornhuskers next season.

"That'll just make us work that much harder," he said. Newton, the All-America offensive tackle, did not win any awards but he was the leader of the line that helped Nebraska rush for more yards (132) than anybody has in two years off LSU. "Knowing we' had a chance for No. 1 made us more loose," he said, "and I think the momentum we had was worth a touchdown to us." If Nebraska should wind up No. 1, it will be the first time an Orange Bowl team has had that distinction since Alabama in 1966.

The Cornhuskers aren't worried: they already feel it's in the bag. Continued from Page IB cept a Jones pass for the Cornhuskers to complete a happy night. As they danced and hugged each other at game's end, the Nebraska band blared forth with "We're No. 1" music and the Orange Bowl's poly-turf was flooded with frenzied bodies. Inside the Nebraska dressing room, it was quite some time before the Cornhuskers stopped clicking their heels long enough to shower and head back to their hotel for the celebration.

Wide receiver Johnny Rogers, who caught four passes for 45 yards, was on a bench shouting, "We're No. 1 in the nation and No. 1 in the world, too." Someone was in the middle of the room taking a picture of a dozen smiling players, all with their first fingers extended in No. 1 fashion. And all of the team's coaches were being hustled off one-by-one to take a fully-clothed shower.

Midway through the funmaking Orange Bowl committee president W. Keith Phillips appeared to announce the most valuable players. He jumped on a bench and said, NebTagge 1 run (Rogerg kick) AflO.A99 fraenrri). ftehrtifkn LSU RUSHING Alt Gain Lett Net 20 8 7 79 2 3 0 3 5 30 0 9 3S 42 -7 8 4 58 -54 1 0 12 -1!
