"They tied our hands, blindfolded us and drove us to a secret jailhouse. They kept us there for a couple of weeks, and all the time they beat us, cut us with knives, burned us with cigarettes and gave us electric shocks. I would call mini-summits to bring pressure on the parties involved.

The son of a coal miner, Alderson grew up with a union perspective. But he made his career on the management side of the street as an executive and consultant. Alderson ran a steel mill near Pittsburgh which was losing $6 million a year when he took over.

Two days after the election, his case came up In court a 73-page, 137-count indictment involving larceny while he ran the Schiavone Construction Company four years ago.

The question is who should replace him? Wayne Alderson of Pittsburgh. He developed what he called the "Value of the Person" approach in which he demonstrated as a manager "love. dignity, and respect" for every worker. For example. he learned the name of every man in the plant.

At the end of work-shifts, he showed up to shake hands with workers and thank them for their work. On a dare from a union shop steward, he started a Bible study once a week at lunch that ultimately attracted hundreds of workers. That led to his downfall. When the company was sold. the new owners told Wayne to stop the Bible study, he refused and was fired.

But he's since forged a new career as a consultant to hundreds of companies with labor management problems. He's earned trust on both sides. More Important, he has a vision' for what a secretary of labor ought to do: 6601 W. 167th Street (Palmetto Expwv. N.W.
