A discussion with the Ayatol-lah on spring fashions wouldn't be any more frustrating. The only thing zealots on either side of the abortion issue will agree upon is 5 p.m.

IsSfl Nostalgia? An anti-abortion protester marches outside the Chester. Reproductive Health and Counseling Center in 'Abortion Clinic' that the other side is totally misguided.

Furthermore, they would prefer that you not try to alter their opinion with facts and new information. That's what "Frontline," the weekly PBS series of documentaries, will attempt to do tonight (Channel 2, 8 p.m.). "Abortion Clinic" attempts to take a non-hysterical, middle-of-the-road approach during interviews with women who had to make the decision whether to abort, with doctors and counselors at an abortion clinic, and with an anti-abortion doctor who shows up as consistently as cartoon shows every Saturday morning to protest the pregnancy terminations taking place inside the Chester, Reproductive Health and Counseling Center. Ironically, the building was formerly a seminary library. Neither faction is likely to be pleased by the program, since the other is given equal time, but the anti-abortion forces probably will be more vocal in their protests.

In addition to making the case that more unwanted pregnancies are the result of gullibilty and stupidity than promiscuity, the hour includes two beginning-to-end terminations. Since Pro-Lifers will be preoccupied getting indignant it's unlikely to occur to them, but the second procedure is as strong an argument against abortion as ever has been made on television. The woman in question is a 17-year-old mother of a 2-year-old who opted for an abortion this time because the father of her unborn child abused, then abandoned her, forcing her to turn to welfare to survive. Throughout the operation she sobs, not from the physical pain, but from the mental anguish. Her counselor, who has assisted hundreds of women through this ordeal, consoles her by explaining, "You chose to have this done, but something is still being taken away from you, and that doesn't feel good." "Abortion Clinic" won't open any closed minds, but it can't be faulted for trying.

(R) Tonight Guest host: Joan street and asked to match local call letters and channel numbers, fewer than haW could do so successfully. Nonetheless, pending expected approval by the Federal Communications Commission, Channel 7 will cease being WCKT and begin life as WSVN at 7 a.m. June 7.

The station should have gone all the way and done it at 7:07 on July 7, or 77, as the banks put it. Bob Leider, general manager of Channel 7, explained the method behind this seeming madness. The growth of cable television has resulted in stations being placed in a position other than their normal numerical spot on the dial in many homes. For example, subscribers of Storer Cable in North Dade receive WCKT on Channel on their cable translator. On Miami Beach's Ultra-Corn system, WCKT is Channel O.

By changing the call letters to WSVN insert the vowel on both sides of the and see what you get Channel 7 can continue its promotional campaign of being South Florida 7, no matter where it winds up on cable translators. The insinuation is that the easier the three letters are to remember, the more of a competitive edge the station will have. The fact that Channel 7 would make such a decision strikes me as amusing. That it felt such a move necessary is depressing. Rivers.

Channel 7, which runs third in the local ratings race, is doing well enough that it can afford to spend more than $100,000 to change its call letters, which provide little of the station's identity anyway. If you don't think so, try to recall the last time someone asked you what station a program was on, and you replied "WCKT" or "WTVJ" or "WPLG." You would, of course, respond Channel 7 or 4 or 10.
