Anglers from the south bay sport fishing center enjoyed a field day as they racked up a catch of J9 of the big yellows, whose weights ran from 20 to 27 pounds.

Captain Roy Peters, skipper of the "City," reported the snow of fish the largest concentration of yellows lie has sighted in this section in years. Paul Poitz, headman for the Seal Beach sport fleet, also reported some nice sand bass catches. Results were made on both the live bait boats and the barge "Alaska which went back into service last week end. A Polynesian from the Samoan Islands landed 27 good- sized gulf croaker and two sargo on light spinning equipment in 30 minutes nearly a fish a minute! Monroe Bids for Upset of Sylmar 'on(. from 1st Page could pick up valuable points in lower places. The Tigers are strong in the long jump, thanks mainly to Tyrone Kontenot, who owns i he best leap of the season, in the league. He'll battle Sylmar's Barry Ingold 2 J'or first place and teammate Prevost and Poly's Dave Sanchez also figure to make it close.

Sylmar's strongest field event is the high jump, where three Spartans could finish among the top five. Marvin Montgomery is almost nonpareil with his leaps of 6-4 this season and looks like a sure winner. Teammates BUI Bond and sophomore Lionel Williams have both gone 6 ft. and will take on San Fernanda's Dale Speights (6-2). Monroe hopes to offset these Sylmar and San Fernando strong areas with its shot-put men and its trio of pole- vaulters--Don Kirkpatrick, John Anneman and Ed Salmon--which figures to net three scoring places.

As San Fernando dominates the sprints, so does Sylniar appeal- able to prevail in both hurdles races. Two big reasons are veteran Montgomery and continuously-improving sophomore Larry Brown. Corona qualifiers del are: Mar's other Greg Fink in the 200 and 400 freestyles; Dee Renfro in the 50 freestyle; Bill Stoner in the 100 yard backstroke. Mike Martin in the 400 freestyle and Pat McClellan in the 100 yard breaststroke. (2ND FLOOR) PANORAMA CITY UNIVERSAL MOTOR IMPORTS IN NORTH HOLLYWOOD Brown (15.2) should give the Spartans eight or nine points in the 120-yard highs and Brown (19.8) should, as he did in almost every dual meet, lead Montgomery to a finish in over the 180-yard Ingold, (20.5) who, with those two, gave Sylmar a sweep in (he event against San Fernando, faces a tough but may give his team another place in the event, possibly as high as (hird spot. Again, Monroe has an answer, for the distance races generally belong to coach Jack Boyd's crew. In the SSO, Boyd has Jim Estes Steve Ellsworth (2:02.8) and Craig George, with the first two exacted to battle San Fernan- 'lo's Don Wichman (2:01.5 in last week's prelims) and Sylmar's Ray Youniacutt. Spartan Ron Grinnell and North Hollywood's Steve Light (2:03.6) are also capable of finishing up front.

Viking Jeff King eased to the fastest mile clocking last week, a school-record 4:30.0. and should have little trouble picking up the victory in today's final. The Vikings are given added strength by the presence of Klaus G-erstlauer (4:41.8) and Bill Gleich with only- two challengers from schools not in championship contention--Poly's Tom Hutcheson (4:45.4) and Grant's Raul Cardenas (4:39.3) given much change to break their monopoly. The league record most likely to fall today is the two-mile standard of 10:18.2 set last year by Poly's Chris Dambacher. Three of the favorites in today's race, for which no qualifying heats were held last k.

have already run faster Jian the present mark and a landful of others also is likely to be pulled to faster times. Grant's Segal has the fastest clocking of the group to date, 10:01.0, but he may have to equal or better that mark to hold off Monroe's seasoned Manuel Moreno (10:11.1) and Sylmar's fine 10th grader, Totora Rick Josephsen, sophomore and a newcomer to Monroe's dazzling of distance standouts, has an official clocking of 10:41.0 so far but has been running around 10:10.0 in recent workouts and could be a factor in a tactical race, possibly enough to contribute some place points to the Viking cause. By no means are all of the individual'standouts members of just the three contenders. Polytechnic in addition to smooth-running sprinter Ross, Dave Sanchez, who has qualified for and will compete in his usual triple--high hurdles, long jump and 440. Sanchez is the East Valley's premier quarter-miler (49.4) and should have little trouble taking that race because he already owns dual-meet wins his two closest challengers, Webster Van (50.2) Nuys' Grant and San Fernando's Byron Askew (51.2).

Otherwise, Sanchez stiff competition, tioned, over the high hurdles and in the long jump. Webster, in addition to his 440 race, will 220-yard dash, for has the league's fastest clocking (22.3). The Class meet shapes up as a battle between San Fernando, Grant and Van Nuys, who finished one-two-three, respectively, in the final league standings. The Lancers got three first places in the field-event finals which were held last week from shot-putter Dennis Carrasco. pole-vaulter Dave Tepper and high-jumper Steve Meerson and totaled points to take a sizeable early lead.

San Fernando, with its strength in the sprint and hurdles races and boasting 14 qualifiers for the finals, and Van Nuys, balanced and with qualifiers, also pose threats. Grant has 12 finals berths going for it in its attempt to protect its advantage over Van Nuys with 13 points, San Fernando 9 North Hollywood Monroe Sylmar and Polytechnic The Class meet is more hectic and complicated yet.
