It is a constant reminder of what might not have been. Martin almost didn't earn that ring, and if he hadn't, there's no telling where he would be now. He almost certainly wouldn't be a featured performer on one of the best series ever made for television.

"I was tremble as a kid," Martin said Friday. "All I was interested in was beer and girls." When he reached 16, the legal age to do so, he tried to drop out. Martin's father reacted as most parents would. He did everything possible to prevent it. One of the last straws he clutched at was getting the Hialeah drama coach, Sandra Riley, to give his son an audition for the school play.

The tryout was for a bit part, but Kiel handled himself so well, he was awarded the lead in "Einian's Rainbow." Suddenly, he had a direction in which to channel his energy. "I knew then that's what I wanted to do and I haven't looked back since," he said. After being graduated from Hialeah, he studied drama at the University of Miami and Trinity University in Texas. By 1967, the creme de la creme of show business, the William Morris Agency, agreed to take him on as a client. Within five days, he had three job offers; he accepted a contract with Universal Studios.

He kept busy most of the time, but none of his parts were the type which are considered at Oscar and Emmy time. "I specialized in playing psychotics," he said. "I have this wild look in my eyes when I want to use it," Among his more frequent employers were Steven Bochco and Michael Kozoll, who collaborated to create "Hill Street Blues." Ilochco and Kozoll specialized in cop shows and used Martin in "Delvecchio" and "Paris." Each time, they told him they had something really special in mind for him down the road. "You hear that all the time out here, so I didn't think too much of it," Martin said Bochco and Kozoll did. The show they had in the back of their minds was "Hill Street Blues," and when they got approval to go ahead with the project, Martin was one of the first people they called.

"The next four hours are the finest I've ever had the opportunity to do." Martin said. "I think it's the best part ever written for an actor on TV." LaRue is almost a symbol of "11SB" always on the ledge, but somehow a survivor because the potential for something special is so apparent. The show has developed almost a cult following. but few of the cult's members are hooked to Nielsen rating devices. "USW' has never been in the top 10 and frequently has landed among the 10 least watched shows.

Yet. thanks to critical acclaim and a letter-writing campaign by fans, the show has been renewed for next season, While Martin and the rest of the "I1SB" company are grateful for the support. they are realists about the future, "The reaction has been great." he said, "hut if we don't get those numbers TV lives by, it won't do any good."
