1 Gsatso.y, Feb. lfl. A beautiful and spring-lik day has dawned after a Bight which to the troop wat one of suspense. As I said in my mtlnigbt dispatch, tbe First battalion, incluiliug the State Guard Veta, the ilcCroarys, slept oa their arm, but it turned out that the alarm which made so much to-do was only another of tbe canard that are to freely circulated in Grayson. It was ugsted this rooming again, as it has been several times before, that these stories are merely a ruse to get the State Guard Accustomed to the cry ot wolf," so that when at lust the wolf docs come tbe old fable vriil be repeated.

This may lie so, but tbe probabilities are it is not. Tbe more one see of the people of Grayson and adjacent country the more convinced must be become of their siucerest opposition to anything like mobocracy. Tbey have now made many friends anionic the soldiers, and tbia will tend to prevent any trouble. Tbe prevailing opinion is that the jury WILL FIND CBAFr QClLTT, and If such is tbe due all trouble will be ended. All tbe people in this section waut is what they conceive to be justice done.

At half past 8 o'clock Craft, under guard of the Louisville Legion, waa marched to tbe Court-lioue. Xeal was not brought op today. There was a full court-room and more interest titan in yesterday's ovideno in the proceed ni. The first witness put oa tbe stand was John 11. Powell, for tbe prosecution.

Lake apt. Wise, Mr. Powell detailed tbe tern bio tragedy aa be heard Ellis narrate it at the former trial'. The story as told this morning waa even more grapblo than as told yesterday, and the thrilling events of that awful Fruity niht for a third time sickened very burvr. ''ths fatal ax crowbar, frith which tbe death-etrokea were inflicted.

r.frere brought into court. Craft shuddered when be miw thein, and afterwards, wben they lay in tbe middle of tbe floor, be teemed to try to avoid looking at them. Tbe ax Is old nd rusty, with a rough oak handle that is warped and beut. Tbe bead of tbe ax is much battered. Tbe iron bar is such as is used by track bands, live feet long, and will weigh twenty-five pounds.

During Mr. Powell's evidence a diagram of the Gibbons bouse was intra dnoed to make tbe tragedy mora clear to tbe jury. After a somewhat tedious cross-examination, wuicb occupied an hour or more, in which tbe defense attempted to make some point oa which to break down tbe witneta' evidence. Dr. Williauf Turnan was placed on the stand.

His testimony related in chief to post mortem performed on Fannie Gibbons and Emma Carqco, which he performed in connection with Drs. Wade and Martin. He detailed the SATLRK OF THE VICTIMS' INJURIES, going into details especially concerning tbe nameless crime committed in connection with tbe triple murder. This evidence was listened to witit bated breath, and was so awful as to send a thrill of horror through every bearer. lJr.

J. W. Martin had a small boy placed before tbe jury, and by him explained the nature ot the injuries inflicted upon Robbie Gibbons. All the doctors agreed that tbe incised and contused wounds tbey found on the bodies could nave been inflicted with tbe ax and crowbar. The witness also identified tne crowbar and ax, and told bow he found blood and hair adhering to them.

Both of tbe witnesses were firms ornminod relative to some expert medical testimony de-bvered. This was exceedingly and the impression prevailed in tbe court-room that the outrage was clearly demonstrated. Tbe dinner hour having been reached an adjournment was had. THB ORIGIN Or LAST RIGHT'S SCARS came out this evnning, and caused as hearty laugh among Uie troops as it did a sensation at midnight. A letter frem a crauk in Franklin, Texas, brought it about.

It came direct to tbe Mayor, and is as follows: Faajncu, Txxas, Feb. 8. To tk Mayor of Crayon Dear ftir: Tbe enemies or the republic are gleefully looking forwaid to iuUatiecine trouble here. A conflict between the citisrns and military la Kentucky would be must uufurtuiiate just now, or at any lime. If it could be avoided.

Can It not Iter Tbe citizens of Urayaou can concede something. Neal and Craft are in tbe hands of Um Skate, and there is no higher authority. "With respect, A.V Hocwo Tbia letter was accompanied by a tract of tU KOST ULTRA CRAXK TTFE. both were read in one of tbe stores last night, and the matter went on tbe wings of rumor to tbe oamp. The story there received was tLat a letter from Texas Hollow, a place near Ironion, had been received warning wonun and children out of tbe camp, as an organised mob would make an attack before morning.

Tbe Democratic canons met to-night, Chairman Burros presiding. I expected to bare an entire column dispatch, but the bill to settle tbe State debt stands exactly as reported and printed by the committee.

After extended remarks by Messrs. Origj, Ivie, Fisk, Patterson, and several resolutions to such effect, tbe amendments adopted Monday and Wednesday nights were reconsidered, and the erasures then mode unanimously voted to be re-instated. These motions-were made by Messrs. Champion and Patterson, respectively. The bill is loft just ai on tbe first night of tbe caucus.

Mr. McHenry, of Madison, who voted Wednesday night to insert three per cent as the basis of settlement for tbe State debt proper, moved to re-consider on a call of the roll. Tbe motion waa carried by ayes, fifty; noes, thirty-two. Tbe following gentlemen, with most commendable courage and magnanimity, voted to reconsider, having voted for three per cent, heretofore, to-wit: Messrs. Bal-lentlne.

After tbe vote was announced Mr. MU liken moved that the caucus adjourn sum die, as be thought nothing but bad blood was being engendered, Tbe motion was lost, when Mr. Manson moved to adjourn till Tuesday next at 7 o'clock, which motion was carried unanimously.

Ex-Uov. Marks was present, and, being recognised, was loudly called for. He excused himself, however, saying that the settlement of tbe debt question waa in the Legislature, and be waa willing to leave the responsibility where tbe people bad placed it. To-night's result is moat gratifying to all who hold, and tbey are largely in the majority, that the debt should be settled strict accord with tbe spirit of tbe Bate platform. Tbe Financial Chronicle will say of tbe business situation to-morrow: There has been no improvement in tbe Mtuation the past week. The truth is that just now there are so many circumstances favoring the indulgence of vague fears, it not surprising the public should be a little nervous end unsettled. This situation, it is also further feared, might make the calling of on extra session almost unavoidable. Under such circumstances it is no wonder that enterprise drags and business prospects are somewhat uncertain, but tbe anxiety Las been aggravated this week by the floods which have lately become so destructive'along tbe line of the Ohio river. This influence acts unfavorably in a double way first, because of its immediate effect through the losses incurred, and the interference with business and railroad traffic resulting; and further, by reason of tbe fears it excites of floods in the Mississippi valley.

The week has been fruitful in special events of more or less importance in their twaring upon the markets. Prominent among tberu was the lease bv tbe Western Union of tbe Mutual Union Teligra'ph Company; also another unfavorable development waa the circumstance that this lease does not seem to put an end to the litigation against the Western Union. It has either furnished the occasion or provocation tor a new legal proceeding. Most likelr this fact and to some extent also tbe death of ex-Uov. Morgan, who is reported to be one of tbe largest holders ot tbe stock, helped tbe downward tendency.

Erie bonds and stocks hava in like manner been under a cloud this week. Tbe special causa which lias acted against this property has been tbe decision last week of the managtrs to issue a collateral trust mortgage. Another influence working against the market has been tbe continued decrease in earnings of the road in the extreme This, however, as we explained but week, is probably wholly temporary, aud due to storms and snow. Tbe Onio flood has also been made of special use to effect the values of the L. and and tbe stocks of.

other roads in that section of tbe country. All the Southwestern roads war in the early part of the week favorably ail ec ted by indefinite rumors with regard to a conference of tbe managers of these roads, at wuich something of Importance would be decided. So far as we are at present informed nothing important has agreed upon, but it is probable that all differences between tbe roads west of tbe Mississippi river will speed Uy be settled. After the adjournment of the meeting on Tuesday the Wabash declined, and the other southwestern stocks wore more or less active as the result of manipulation, bat on Thursday and Friday the whole market tell off under tbe influence of the unfavorable news regarding the freshets on tbe Ohio. One Of the strongest stocks in tbe middle of the week was the Illinois Central, which advanced on tbe announcement of a seventeen per cent, scrip dividend.

Tbe market for foreign exchange remains firm. The demand is steady without being verjr urgent, and the tone is extremely Our grain markets have been stimulated this week by the reports that tbe seed planted in Great Britain and on the Continent lost fall had rotted and that there is a prospect of a short crop in Europe. Tbe advance in price has completely checked the export demand. Tbe European, and especially tbe continental grain centers, are said to be well supplied, but if tbe reports now current of damage tq tbe crop of winter wheat in Europe are confirmed, and if tbe weather continues unfavorable for spring sowing, there may follow such an urgent inquiry for our cereals as will start a free export movement and give as a steady supply of bills. DULL, WEAK OPE3IKO, BUT THE CLOSE STRONGER AMD HIGHER, GIVIXG RISE TO THE BELIEF THAT BETTER TIMES ARE COM-INC1 TUX DKPREaslNQ IXFLCEKCES. Special to tin Courier-Journal "New York, Feb. 16. Tbe stock market seems to have lost all animation and neither tbe bulls nor tbe bears seem to have very strong convictions as to tbe future of prices. A great variety of circumstances hava combined in tbe lost month to cause many holders ot long stocks to sell thein out.

Snows in tbe Northwest, floods in tbe Middle States and the consequent interruption of railway business, failures in mercantile and manufacturing interests, both East and West, together with a simi lar condition of things in Europe, have undoubtedly obliged thousands of holders of securities to realize on them, all of which bat bad, and has yet, its effect to keep the market depressed. But, that these influences nave- probably spent at least the greatest part of their force, seems more than probable, otherwise tbe market would hava run into a panic long ago. Tbe present general character of the market is only extreme dullness, and as is always the case in a dull market, whether for stocks or anything else, the tendency of prices under such circumstances ia generally downward. Tbe experience this forenoon showed a weak market throughout, tbe weakness being most positive about 12 o'clock, wben a da-cbne of to 1 took place, tbe net result, however, of tbe forenoon being a decline of tolas' in tbe active stocks. Tbe most active were Lackawanna, Reading, Milwaukee and St.

Paul, Lake Shore, Union Pacific. Wabash, Louisville and Nashville, and Erie. St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba declined from 13U t6 136; Peoria, Decatur and Evansville declined from 23 to 20; Richmond and West Point from 23 to 21. Haunibal and St.

Joe preferred at first advanced from 83 to Otix, and then declined to 84. Illinois Central declined from 141X to 'i'ua total of sales up to o'clock was about 230,000 shores, of which tbe greater part waa in the hour and half before 12:30. After 12:30 tbe stock market became firmer, and during tbe hour and half to 2 o'clock there was a general fractional advance on the whole list, but still leaving the market for tbe active list at 2 o'clock atiout 1 per cent, to 1 per rant, below the closing prices ot last night. At 2 o'clock tbe market was only steady. The loaning rates for stocks to-day were generally 2 to 8 per except Lake Shore, which loaued at 2 and 1 per and Lackawanna at 1 per cent.

There was also a borrowing demand for Wabash, Ia the last hour there was a very decided upward action in tbe stock market from tbe depression in the forenoon, and although ths dosing prices were in a good many case lower than the closing of last night, there', were also a good many that were higher, on the whole the general tone of tbe market was stronger than last night. Ia the first half of tbe last hour there was a selling movement In Krie which declined from 8ofZ to 84X, after having declined from 8o earlier ia the day. The total sales of Erie in the hoar and a half to 8 o'clock were about 85.000 shares. The rest of the market did not sympathize with this late selling ot Brie, bat remained steady and as soon as the sake of Erie ceased, about 2:15, there was a general upward movement ot prices. Taken as a whole, conservative booaes thought tfie mtua'ion looked a little better this afternoon than It has before.

CHICAGO 11ABXZT8. A BULL MOVEMKXT Df WHEAT WHICH STTR- FRISEa AKD DISCOMFITS THS WEALTHY BE ARA TBE MARKET STILL SERV0U8. BUT PRICES IIOHEB, Special tn tk Conrter-JcmmalA Chtcaqo, Feb. 16. Tbe 'servant gal's deal," as the rich bear speculator contemptuously calls the present general boll movement on wheat, keeps right along.

It has advanced the May option tram 98e to 116 a bushel, and all tbe others proportionately. It has taken dollars upon dollars out of the pockets of tbe rich men who believed themselves the autocrats of prices. It has treated all tbe bears to a greet scare, and some of them it has even driven oat of tbe market. Rk-h operators, whether bulls or bears, have always a great contempt for any speculative views held by the general public For once, at any rate, with its winning safuly in its pocketa, the publlo' ran feel subliiufly indifferent concerning tbe opinions of the professionals. The recent great advance in wheat hi notable berauw it is the first niovemeut of snv magnitude for a long while in this market that baa not been engineered.

Tbia 011a was not hurried or aiiied by any one of the great speculators. McGeoch has not been a bull in tbe gram; Armour has not ten operating in it; Handy has bad nothing to do with it. la need, two of these had been pronounced bears. Tbe farmers have ever since harvest time been holding on to their grain because they believed price were too low. Tbe country store-keepers, ths millers, tbe speculating schoui-marms and schoolmasters and all sorts of little people throughout the West have evidently thought as the fanners did.

for ths commission men say that tbeir orders to bav rotne from all over tbe Wet end are smalL Tbe result has been that wheat has advanced without the aid of the capitalists, even in spite of the opposition of some ot tnem. Tbe public, in taking the ball side, bos been very considerably influenced by the reports of poor crop prospects abroad. Tbe representative of tbe English houses here have received for weeks from their home bouses dexpoudent letters concerning tbe planting. It should have been finished in November, bat rams flooded the fields and mode it impossible to plant in soma instance, and washed out or rotted the seed in others. The alarming reports are received almost altogether from England, and it is tbe English exporters who are the most "bullish." A very prominent commission house received this week from its Parte representative a long latter, which said: "In ranee planting bad not been interfered with, and the prospect were not bad." A lotter was received in this city Wednes-dar from Messrs.

Straaaer Koenig, of Budapesth, one of the largest handlers of Russian gram in Europe, and it said that crop prospecta ia Russia, Mourn aula, and Hungary ware good. These three countries raisa more surplus wheat than any other European States. The letter declared that all tbe farmers were speculating on higher prions and were withholding their wheat. This la exactly what the American farmers are doing and tbe coincidence is remarkable and It is said upon good authoritv that Armour has recently sold ia New York and abroad a great deal of wheat. It was part ot the property that be was compelled to take here wben be ran his huge corner in July.

Tbe grain market were extremely nervous again to-day. The little decline of last night waa at once recovered, and the storm which waa prevailing started a very sharp advance. Tbe alarm of tbe shorts was increased by the prediction made by the Sigual Office that very cold weather was en route from Manitoba. Wheat opened just about where it closed Thursday, declined a small fraction aud then began and continued to advance until the very close tonight. May closed on the-call at 116.

1) above last night. Tbe volume of to-day increased as tbe day advanced, and there was tbe greatest excitement and the sharpest advance at the very close. Tbe cold weather predicted for to-morrow ia certain to bring in, after the recent warm rains, countless rumors ot frostbitten wheat. There was a rush to-day of the shorts of corn to cover. There is comparatively very little speculation in this gram now, but it advanced with wheat.

Just before tbe January clique sold its rash property for February, certain speculators in tbe secret went very largely short. Tbe sales were made for May from 66 up to 58. and for tbe other options at figures lower than those ruling now. Purchases by these short have helped along the advance in corn of bite. A scramble by shorts at the close on tbe call sent May corn up to 62, 1 higher than last night.

The other options were $1 higher than twenty-four hoars ago. Pork and lord were both higher, the former per barrel and tbe latter per 100 than twenty-four hours ago. The Taliaky of the Iowa Liaaor Law. DesMoixes, Feb. 16.

Tbe Attorney General bas been consulting with tbe Governor for a day or two past, and it is credibly reported that be will soon prepare a petition to tbe Supreme Court for a rehearing of tbe prohibition amendmeut validity case.
