In spit of precautions taken hr citiseos and tbe vigilance of the police, tbe sluggers till oontinua at their work, and, yesterday morning and last night no less than four pernor were stopped by theae pests in the East End.

Yesterday morning about 5 o'clock a boy named John IV ti mark, wbo work at Cook's baker shop, on Fifth and tbe river, was hung np by three colored men on the leree. Tbey offered no violence, but went through bit pockets and got what money he had, a dime, and then took some bread he wan delivering and skipjied. Shortly afterwurd, Joe Melcher, who keeps a saloon on the river front, was stopped by three colored men on tbe leree, between Third and Fourth streots. They proposed to bo through him. but he drew a pistol and frightened them away before they got anything.

The same men frightened a little girl named Katie O'Reiley, who went to the pump at Third and the river just at daybreak. Tbey approached her, but she screamed and they ran away. Lart night about o'clock Mr. John Miller, who lives at First and Breckiuridge streets, was returning from the Excelsior works at Third and Breckinridge, and was knocked down by two men and robbed of about $15. Mr.

Miller had been paid for his week's work and was only a few yards from his front gate when the men stepped up from behind and knocked him almost with a slung shot. They took what be had and skipped out, leaving him on tbe pavement. lie noon got up and made bis way home, when it was tound that beyond a sore bead and a largo burnt) he had sultered mrbodily injury. Mr. Miller says the men who' assaulted him were white, but that tbey were unknown to him.

The State Board of Pharmacy held its regular semi-annual meeting yesterday afternoon, in tbe parlors of the Louisville College of Pharmacy on Green, between First and Second streets. The members of tbe Board present were: C. Louis Deihl, President; J.

W. Fowler, Secretary; J. H. Flexaer, Wiley Rodger, Mr. Henry Megill, of Owensboro, and T.

B. Wood, of Lex ington. AfteY transacting the regular routine business, the law regarding the compounding of drugs and medicines waa taken up, and it was resolved to enforce it rigidly, so that every prescriptionist must either be a regular graduate in pharmacy or be examined by toe board. The report of tbe Committee of Examination was next adopted. It showed that extensive and vigorous work has been done in the city and that preparations are being made to prosecute the aims of the board thoroughly In all tbe towns in the State with over Inhabitant.

Dr. J. W. Fowler, the Register of the Board, reported that, on the examinations made in the city np to date, there are iS'o practicing pharmacists and SMtt practicing assistant pharmacists wbo are duly qualified, and who have bean granted certificate to practice. Tbe law, as it now stands regarding pharmacists, requires them to be duly qualitied with a certificate of examination or a college diploma, in all towns having more than 5.0U0 inhabitants, and the question was discussed to whether or not it would be better to have the law apply to every town in tbe State regardless of tbe population.

Early yesterday morning thieves entered the saloon of tieorge White, at tbe corner of Shelby and Main, and robbed tbe cash drawer. To conoeal the theft they then made an attempt to commit arson.

It so happened that Capt. Edward Stilts, of No. 8 Fire Company, was going oil watch about 1 o'clock, and saw smoke issuing from the saloon. He gave tbe alarm to his companions at tbe engine house. They aroused Mr.

White, who was sleeping in tbe building, and began to work on tbe fire. It bud been started just underneath the counter, but fortunately had not made much headway when discovered, and the firemen put it out "by throwing water from buckets upon it bofore any great damage was done. On examining the place it waa found that the back dour bud been broken open and that the till bad been robbed of $35. A large and valuable looking glass was broken, and a lot of glassware waa destroyed. In addition to the money stolen the thieves helped themselves bountifully 'to liquor, so that Mr.

White estimates his loss from both fire and burglars at about i00. A fcbot Through Ine Fane. Mr. H. J.

Eggers, wife of the grocery man at the corner of Jefferson and Preston streets, came near being shot last night about 10 o'clock in her room over the store. She hod been attending the store all tbe evening, and, going up stairs, had just lighted tbe gas when a pistol shot was heard and a ball shattered the window pane and buried itself in the wall near her sido. She told her husband of what bad happened, and an investigation was made, but to no purpose, as all that oould bo learned regarding the matter was that immediately alter tbe shot bad been tired two unknown men had been seen running down Preston Whether the shot was accidental or fired intentional is not known, but it certain that Mrs. Eggers narrowly escaped. Kansas City Journal: The New Year's reception at Judge Ramon's, on Tracy Arenas, between Fifth and Sixth streets, waa a brilliant and almost bewildering scene during the entire day. Tbe Street Commissioners were Instructed to repair Dewey street, near Vincennes street.

Adopted. Mr. South introduced a resolution Instructing the Committee on Schools to inquire into the feasibility 6t opening night schools. Mr. Penn moved that the Committee on Schools require the Secretary of tne School Board to make a report to the Council.
