1:30 lis. DEL Graceland in C. 10. In I vice ons 2 A Dec. 17, 1974 THE MIAMI NEWS 11A Opa-locka orders probe into rioting By BILL GJEBRE Miami News Reporter Opa-locka commissioners will conduct an investigation Jan.

7 into the immediate and underlying causes of rioting during which hundreds of youths threw rocks. Commissioners voted yesterday afternoon at a specials session to make an investigation. They also asked representatives of the Community Relations Board and the Community Action Agency to work to keep the city under control. riot broke out early yesterday after the arrest of a youth on a disorderly conduct charge at traveling carnival show. Afterward, the rock throwing began, and a grocery store was looted before the disturbance could be brought under control by city and county police.

"This community has to take responsibility for what happened," said assistant mayor Albert Tresvant, the only black member of the five-member commission. "We need better housing and a drug program in the city," Tresvant said. These shortcomings, he said, were the long range problems which surfaced to fuel the riot. Tresvant blamed the county for repeatedly rejecting Opa-locka's, requests for money to provide better housing and a drug program. While commissioners planned to look into the cause of the riot, they made it clear that they would back the officers involved in incidents which sparked the trouble.

"Our officers got hurt during this thing," said Mayor. Kenton Wells. "One officer was hit with a rock and another was kicked. Those who broke the law should be punished." Police Chief Stanley Eshuk gave the commissioners a rundown of the incident. According to Eshuk, a 16-year-old youth was arrested by officer Larry Houston after he blew marijuana smoke at the officer, Some objects were thrown at Houston's cap as he was driving the youth to the police station on a possession of marijuana charge.

A while later, Eshuk said, fighting broke out and when officer Raymond Owens tried to arrest a 17. year-old girl, she slapped and kicked him. Afterwards, Eshuk said, large groups of people gathered along Ali Baba and NW 22nd Avenue began throwing rocks, and later looted a grocery store. D. E.
