By MICHAEL DIXON Chkage Daily News CHICAGO Talking to Susali Swift and her mother, Mrs. Jeanine Swift, could change your mind about "spoiled" child actors and their "pushy" stage mothers. Child actors are usually thought rpt as little terrors who are cute and-or charming only when stealing scenes before the cameras. And "stage mothers" are known for keeping their kid's best interest at heart, so long as that interest involves a bigger or better part. But the Swifts, -who are from Houston, don't fit those roles.

If it's possible to remain "normal" in the wake of an the attention that comes with a role in a major movie such as "Audrey. Rose," Susan has done it. And she and her mother are having fun in the bargain. Twelve-year-old Susan won the part of Ivy Templeton, a girl tormented as the reincarnation of a child who died in a fiery auto and' dent, through a "nationwide talent search" by the producers of the atlas film. Susan is on a promotional tour for "Audrey, Rose," which also stars Marsha Mason and Anthony Hopkins.

She seemed to enjoy play-ink with her 10-year-old sister Kathryn more than being interviewed. Just as most 12-year-old girls would. And her mother did something a good "stage mother" would never do. She sat quietly and let her daughter talk about what she had done. "I thought the movie was fun to do," said Susan.

never really thought about being in motion pictures. Then (last spring) one of the teachers at my school told me that a movie producer was coming down to audition girls for a part in a movie and asked if I was interested, "They sent me a couple of scenes to rehearse, and I guess they liked me 'cause I'm here. For Susan Swift filming Audrey Rose great way to spend sumrtler vacation r. SUSAN SWIFT Making the 'movie was a great way to spend summer vacation." In this case "school" wasn't Webster Intermediate School, in Webster, Texas, where Susan's a seventh grader. She was talking about the Alley Theater's Merrygo-Round school, where Susan appeared in four plays before "Audrey Rose" producer Frank De Fel' itta found her "We were really impressed with her," said De Felitta, author of the novel "Audrey Rose," and of the screenplay, who was along on the tour.

"We were especialy, impressed because 'she had no real acting background. "I know it sounds like a cliche, but we really did conduct a nationwide search for a girl to play Audrey it seemed that all the 10- or II-year-old girls who could act up a storm were already In a series. The casting director had looked from New York to San Francisco. When she came back froml Texas she said 'I think we've got Susan went to Hollywood for a screen test, which De Fe litta said "hit us right between the eyes. It was so good that we were certain she couldn't do it again- and we tested her," De Felitta said.

"She did. Then we asked (actress-director) Joan Darling for an evaluation, and she was absolutely impressed with her." "Yeah," Susan laughed, "Joan Darling said I was a 21-year-old midget "The people on the set were real nice," she said. "Everyone was very relaxed and made jokes," she said, starting to laugh. "Like every time the director would call for the make-up man, he'd answer, "Ever or 'Even as you One day he put mustaches on everybody. "Making the movie was fun to do.

It was just like a big game, and I guess I'm just extra good at playing the game," she said. "If I get a chance to make more movies, I hope the next one is just as much fun," Mrs. Swift had been sitting In a chair across the room, quietly talkIng to Kathryn. She was asked if she feared all the attention might Susan? Will Susan be changed by the experience? "I don't expect her to be the same," Mrs. Swift replied.

"People are changed by any experience. But if it gets to the point where we can't handle it as a family we'll stop. "My husband (George, a 'marketing vice president for the American National Insurance Company) and I look at our daughters as ourselves in the next generation. We wouldn't do anything to jeopardize But there is one change that has already taken place, according to Susan. "Dad says that he used to be known as Jeanine Swift's husband," she laughed.

"Now he's known as Susan Swift's father." E'dlOtAILELACa EVERY SAT. IIITE 0 P.M.
