It was one of Hemingway's fa. vorites, and his wife Mary concoct- ed a special recipe for her hus. band's gastronomic pleasure: The best I ever found, however was at the Havana Yacht Club, upon the I recommendation by now-gone po- I litical cartoonist Massenger.

1 One would believe, with Influx of former Cuban restaurateurs into 1 Miami, that picadillo would rank I high on menu offerings. Even though it's a downright inexpen. I sive dish to prepare just a mat. 1 ter of proper ingredients and 1 know-how in order to transform I ground beef into a lovely mess of hash. I But such Is not the case.

As. I proven by the picadillo sampled the 1 other night at the very fancy Trianon restaurant In Little Havana. I The price is right $2.25 but the recipe, as they say on the Trail, I "no es The Trianon is brightly lighted I with an abundance of colorful 1 decor in blues, yellows and greens. 1 1 And like almost every other restaurant 71n the area it's strictly for I budgeteers. i There's soft white formica tables, attentive Etiglish- 1 speaking waitresses, and a menu that runs the whole gamut of Cuban-Spanish-American food.

Including 29 sandwiches, everything from a Media Noche to an Elena Ruz. I don't know what an Elena Rtiz Is, but I do know that the picadillo was much too mild, lacking the zing of the almonds, raisins and olives of pre-Castro Havana picadillo. Of course, management makes it easy to compensate for the "mildness." On the table were two bottles of Heinz ketchup, salt, pepper, sugar, oil, vinegar, tabasco and soy sauce. Otherwise, things went well at the Trianon. A basket crammed with warm sesame-topped bread, delicious thicken soup loaded with white meat, and a main dish of Bistee Milanesia Latter here is a large-sized steak, lightly breaded and deep-fried, and topped with an ample supply of melted cheese.

Accompaniments for the two main dishes included heaps and heaps of white rice, rice-and-beans (marvelous!) and plenty of fried plantains (overly dry). Flan, naturally, for dessert; but the Trianon's flan is coarser than most, sweeter than some, and costs 75 Coffee here is 35 cents. Beers and wines available with the wine list heavy on Spanish reds, whites and roses. Price: $6 to $8 a bottle, although it can be had by the glass or carafe. As in most Little Havana restaurants the people are usually more interesting than the food.

The night I longed for Mary Hemingway's recipe for plcadillo the next table was occupied by a pair of cute chicks in hot pants devouring a slice or chocolate layer cake the 'size of a melon. As you can tell, dress here is as casual as the the food.
