A THE MIAMI NEWS. Tueidav. October 26, 1963 SB Jock Houghteling's HIGH NOTES They Aren't Laughing At FSU Now Vic Vacraro, Miami Beach coach, figures he's come UP with a real find in halfback-fullback Ronnie Kaplan, a 11)0- halfback Jack Swannn, who made five tackles and three assists. Other standouts on defense were Richard Gilot, Richard Johnson, Ron Goodrich and pounder who wasn't even on If" a John Crittenden's SPORTS li, NOTEBOOK rr4f i tne season. Bon- Progress is like this.

In Jacksonville, a University of Florida stronghold for years, people used to laugh at Florida State. But the Gator Bowl just repainted its stands, and made one of the end zones garnet and gold FSU colors. Rick Barry'i jittery first match with the Celtics he scored just seven points didn't surprise Bruce Male at all. "He's always been nervous," said the U-Miami coach. "Don't forget that in his first start for us as a sophomore, Rick scored only nine points." And that was against Tampa In its first four games, SMU didn't score in the opening half North Texas State came to Arkansas last weekend to play before a near-sellout crowd for a flat $6,000 guarantee.

Sure, it's just a game, but there is some businesslike wheeling and dealing in it. Fine banquet conversation, like right out of from Sandy Koufax's post-Series award luncheon: TOASTMASTER: "Already four mothers called and asked because the Lions have flunked in the recruiting race for Negro talent. The school which produced Lenny Moore and Dave Robinson, among others, now has one Negro on the varsity football team and none on the freshman squad. When Florida's dressing room was burglarized after the Mississippi game, Gov. Burns bought $400 worth of future votes by going to each player who was robbed and matching the money that he had lost.

Bear Bryant's record against Tennessee: 5-8-4 "Playing LSU," said Texas linebacker Joe Wellborn, "was just like digging a hole in the sand. You'd dig some out and some more would (all in." Georgia Tech brought a 5-man freshman squad to Jacksonville to face Miami. No wonder Tech had trouble living with the SEC's scholarship limits. 6, Put down Louisville as the early favorite in the Hurricane Basketball Classic, mostly because of large Wes Unseld, a 6-8, 240-pound center who averaged nearly 36 points per game last year and 23 rebounds for the Louisville freshmen. Macy.

Each had at least three tackles A Broward County sportswritcr who is seeking a separate conference for Broward schools will get a lot of encouragement from virtually every Dade school. Most Dade schools play the Browards out of friendship and all lose money on the deal. For the game at Pompano Beach two weeks, ago, Gables students bought pie-game tickets while the host Tornadoes sold just 13fi. That's how well the Browards support their teams. I Another week of action has if I could introduce their daughters to Sandy.

EARL STEWART Friday and 3 on Saturday. They'll take their written examination on the lectures Monday morning early, follow that with an 18-hole qualifying round, then play 18 Tuesday and wind up with 36 Wednesday, Nov. 3. Stewart was asked how many of the 50-man field would "graduate." "I'm meeting with the officials of the PGA tomorrow to set up a cut-off figure for the qualifying rounds. After all, this is what they'll be doing when they get on tour, trying to make the cuts at various tournaments and trying to get in the money." What about those who don't graduate.

Do they get another chance? enough points to stay on tour. "Yes. if they go through the same sectional recommendation process, they can attend the next session," Stewart said, "and I think that will probably be scheduled in May of next year. The plan right now is for two sessions per year." One of the more interesting things to come out at the Approved Players School is what might be in the offing for graduates of the first class and for some players already on tour. Several sources say that with the increase of interest in golf, the PGA understandably wants the good young players, but since there's room for only so many on tour, only the best are going to be able to stay there.

Stewart is coordinator of the 10-day program at the PGA National Golf Course, and said that the reason for the school is simple: "It is designed to take the burden of making a judgment on a proposed player's talent away from the local level. Formerly the various sections were responsible for screening and qualifying a man for the (our, but all they do now is screen and recommend for the new qualifying program." Stewart added, "The sections are responsible for verifying a candidate's financial qualification (each must guarantee he is of high moral standards and have a $10,000 bankroll and that the PGA qualifying program takes over from there."
