Boston College gained 216 BY JOHN LAIRD American Sports Editor LUBBOCK The adjustment required of young people by college ii no secret, and everyone knows the quick and drastic changes demanded of the football player. 1 But, for a young man who goes from schoolboy superstar to collegiate benchwarmer, that adjustment is ajl too real and all too painful.

Donald Roberts just may be the best all-around athlete in the Southwest Conference. With the arm of a professional, he is a very good quarterback. As one of the fastest on the Texas Tech football team, he is a very good defensive back. He is, also a very good punter and is very good returning kicks. Because he is" "only very good" in these departments, he stands alone as a second-string-everything.

All around him he finds athletes of inferior overall ability, but there are so many specialists at every position he must accept the role of a reserve. Roberts' varsity debut here Saturday night was a study in frustration. Until 5:48 showed on the fourth quarter clock he was little more than one of the 38,542 spectators at Jones Stadium. That, mind you, is more than the typical adjustment required of a college gridder. Roberts' high school athletic career was legendary.

He is to Seminole what Don Meredith is to Mount Vernon, what Joe Barnes is to Big Lake and what Donald Walker is to Pecos. Sitting on the Red Raider bench might not be so different if Roberts had not earned 14 letters at Seminole High. Before he left the 3 A school, the young star had three all-district basketball nods, all-state football honors and was that his favorite food was "cherry delight cooked by his mother for dessert." Indeed Roberts Is the pride of Seminole. He is a monument to modesty. Roberts seems oblivious to the thousands of iwoDle watching his team.

He appears unaware of the magnitude of his role. So innocent, that when approached in the postgame locker room he said, "Are you sure I'm the one you want to talk to? I'm Donald Roberts. So what is his role at Texas Tech? "To stay ready." Roberts does this by finding a spot on the sidelines and staying there, watching the game intently, putting forth no emotions stronger than an occasional handclap and, most importantly, concentrating. With Tech controlling a 24-3 lead, Roberts finally entered the game. He displayed a greater desire to run with the football than Tommy Duniven, his superior who completed none of 12 passes for 76 yards and one touchdown.

With just over a minute left in the contest, Roberts fumbled the football to a teammate. Taking over after starting quarterback Marty Akins suffered a concussion early in the second quarter, Presley was a one-man gang in rallying the Longhorns. Don Burrisk plunged for the second touchdown and Graylon Wyatt passed 12 yards to Tommy Ingram for another. The Rice defense stiffened in the fourth quarter when the Cougars drove to the Owl one-yard line but were held for no gain on three straight line plunges.
