NBC found a Roddenberry-created series contained the elements a appealed to all population. But by then, it was too late NBC tried to cancel the show in 1968. before the 6369 season A record plus letters.

cards and calls from fans kept the show on for one more season, but as Doohan explained, the cast knew the writing was on the wall. "The first 'and second season shows and scripts were the best, but we all knew there would not be a fourth season and as such, we looked upon it as simply a job," he said. "Being a star, or having a winning television series, is simply a matter of luck. We had great writing and direction, for the most part, and a great executive producer in Gene Roddenberry," Doohan continued "Star Trek did create a 'something' which was believable-- a future environment populated i real people and containing machinery and equipment which could become a reality." Doohan is a master of dialects and the Scots brogue fans associate with Scotty was one of five possible voices Doohan did for Roddenberry. "Roddenberry told me Scotty was his 'reaction shot'.

Whenever he wanted to create believability, he would cut to my close-up," he said "There's a lot of me in Scotty. I guess. Roddenberry pretty much fully created Captain Kirk. Spock and Dr. McCoy, although we were well into the first season before the repartee between Spock and Dr.

McCoy became a standard part of the show. "I love science and I like science fiction when it's not monsters. As long as a story has some plausible, possible scientific base, 1 myself could believe it also. "But that in essence is an actor's job--to be believed Star Trek did not affect me that much I enjoyed the show and I of course enjoy the fans. "Star Trek fans are something else--I once had a little boy ask me for some of my blood.

Now that's going a bit too far!" Star Trek fans seem to come in two categories-and both were present in Thursday's audience. The first group recognizes the show as a classic science fiction production and is mainly concerned about the sets, special effects and the scripts The second group, which may outnumber the first, consider themselves as ex- officio members of the Enterprise crew. Their questions are along the lines of "How fast can the Enterprise go?" and -'In DOOHAN IN 1976 actor that episode when a the actor, seemingly responded with a i a toward the first group and tried, probably in vain, to pull the second group back to earth. And, what next for Star Trek 11 Doohan, who with gray- streaked hair and a beard and moustache (and a few- extra pounds that Star Fleet wouldn't have allowed), laughs with and at his answer.
