"Hoity Toltjr." Says tho manager: 'it Is said that the sit- imtiou In New York na regards ohorus girls is alarming to managers who contemplated musical comedy productions this season. Not only is tile supply inadequate, but girls TV ho last season received $1G to $18 per week this season demand and have no trouble in obtaining 523 and per weelt, and the result is said to be the abandonment of! several contemplated productions. "SVeuer Fields, the noted producers of musical comedy, are quietly enjoying the situation, for with their usual Keen perception they realized the condition of affairs last summer and quietly signed without difficulty the very cream ot available talent, as the "Weber Fields' chorus has a world-wide reputation, and the average, chorus girl will sacrifice any other engagement for the distinction of being enrolled on the-staff of Weber Fields.

"Holty Tolty," which comes, to the Grand Opera House Sunday matinee and nicht, hus reaped the benefit oC this-condition, as Weber Fields, finding that they had a greater number of girls engaseJ than they could comfortably use at their Broadway Theater, t.ransferred twenty-four ot most talented to this organization, and it ia said that the Hoity Tolty" chorus, from a beauty, singing and the acme of poetic movement in dances and This clrei: be one of fi many. the irolm, will be used In constructing the grade-raising -canal, our dredges iwod In and will be the flrst to reaclrGaiyeston fri Itwill would be pleased'If you would say to the public," remarked Cript. "that the contractors have addressed a communi- cation'to our Board, in which.tjiey say that n.1! houses north of Market street und east of Thirteen. street below crade, must be raised by the 15th day of May sis. they confidently expect to begin miinff.thls territory at a date between May 15 and June 1, also that all houses south of Market street and north of Hroadwuy must be raised by July 1.

They aay that they expect to complete the tilling north of Broadway, by Aug. 1. It is their plan to use the-lining taken from -the canal north of Market filling the private property and streets, but the material taken from-the canal spuf.h Market street will be placed on the seawall right of Mr. Marinus P. Goedhart, wno will have charge of the office of Messrs, oedhart Bates, the contractors, in this city, as their official representative, and is a brother of Mr.

Goedhart of thut firm, arrived In the city Thursday evening. Enginers Kleyn and Brand, assisted by Messrs. Lyons and Crandall, will hereafter devote their time exclusively to the physical work. The work on the draw bridge north of the Sealy Hospital Is progressing, and nearly all of the material is on the This bridge will ready for use some time during the early nan of May. From Broadway westward the contractors expect to Mil between the seawall, and tho canal flrst, and then start on Broadway and fill south to the canal.

By this means the cajial will" be heat used for drainage. The contractors have also decided some 2,000.000 cubic yards of filling from out of the Gulf. They propose to construct a pile trestle -oat from the shore at the foot of Thirty-Fourth street some-800 to 1,000 feet, and on the top of this trestle lay a pipe running over the top of seawall. As soon as the brawbridge near the Soaly Hospital is completed, the working force will 'start on this trestle. The building of the seawall by the county will in nil probability be completed by the; latter part of July.

Until this is done the filling from the Gulf can not be attempted on account of the railroad tracks. Altogether thera will be something like twelve million cubic yards of filling, and ot this amount ten million-will be taken from the bay and between 1 the'Jctties nnd two million from the Gulf, as explained. This Gulf filling will, be used exclusively in the territory west ot Twenty-EIuhth street and south ot It Is figured that two dredges will bi employed in thp Gulf and that, the material will be gathered not nearer than 3,000 feet from the shove line. At the end of the trestle a basin.will be- duff out nnd maintained, as the boats, when loaded, draw eighteen feet. It is thought that the self-contained hopper dredges tan be In the Gulf on an average- of fifteen days out of eacli month.

On other days all four dredges will be employed In the canal. This change In the original plan ia due to the twelve months' time-limit for filling of the- sea wall right of way, and the further fact thut the law requires that aomo fllline should be done in the western portion of the city at or about the name limb as in the eastern portion. The Auditorium Is just east of.Twenty-Eighth street, and thin buildinn will not be disturbed the part of September. Howard Lectured to a Large Audiertce Last Night--Local Conditions and Remedies--Enjoyable Oyster Roast; a most ylvlct-manner Dr. L.

O. Howard delivered an mustrutcrt lecture hint evening at tho Scottish Rite OalluHlrtU on "Mosquitoes." In a I'onvlncing manner wus shown tho gratifying results that bocn ox- poi-itmcod In Cuba through protection from this pestiferous insect, and deduutiotis drawn wore that If and the Southern'States, also Mexico, will unuiluto tho example that hns been set by tho isluml iiolghbur the South, absolute freedom will be-enjoyed from malaria, yellow fever and other diseases of a kindred character. A sermon could have been preached with tho wealth of-materlal and rich fund of data that Dr, Howard had at his command, but he contented himself with laying; before his audience tho facts, showing them the results, and then letting them draw their conclusions, lie says that the action an-intelligent community will take.Is obvious and a sermon would be useless. Howard hardly needed an introduction to a Texas.audience, as fur many years he iiiis been the recognized authority on. entomology In not only the United.States, but in the- world, and Included unions his investigations is the boll weevil.

In his treatment thus far of. that important subject, he has, with' his corps of able assistants, attained such satisfactory results that many, considered it a rare privilege to see him in person and hear him speak. The result was that the auditorium was well tilled last evening and those present enjoyed the lecture. The speaker was introduced by Dr. C.

Trueheart, the City Health Physician, who, by of preface, adverted to the necessity of a thorough and systematic campaign against mosquitoes, filth and Mies if. Gul- vcston would bo rc-Hoved infectious diseases. "There would bo no malaria and no yellow fever jf there were no mosquitoes," declared once into his subject. He continued: "It is no longer a theory, but Is a demonstrated We. must do with them rapidly as possible." Dr.

The speaker- impressed" the VudloncR with the necessity of talcing time by the forelock nnd preparing for emergencies by waging a' campaign against the mosquitoes as a pre-. caution against the possible reappearance of yellow fever in the State this This is important, he said, and the. matter should be thoroughly investigated.

First there were shown upon the canvas magnified reproductions of the genus eulex mosquito. These, Dr. Howard stated, are the houSehold mosquitoes, are brown in color, with transparent wings. Only the female mosquitoes of this genus bite, but the males are famouspheer drinkers. They breed in water bnrrejs, etc.

He says that they are at hnmc Ti Kwamps'and in hollow trees where water accumulates in the rainy season. Fish according to'the authority, are great enemies of mosoultoes. Several different; kinds can be: used fur this purpose, but Howard especially recommended goldfish. He said that of course the nsh can not be expected, to exterminate their foes every time, as, for instance; wliere the water is covered with a growth of water lilies, upon which the mosquitoes breed and thrive, in such cases, and where the water Is either, in streams, springs or other useful iuui not desirable to be drained out, the or vegetable growth should 'bft removed. 'Where there is water, he said, mosquitoes win breed.
