HEALTH STUDIO By CHARLIE NOBLES Miomi News Reporter Last season the Miami Dolphins kept five running backs on their 40-miin roster and one for their taxi aquad. Ed Jenkins was the spare tire. "Being the sixth man in a five-man backfitld was like taking your sister along on a date," Jenkins says.

"You know, she's not really needed." Jenkins, a rookie then, felt unneeded. He scored the offense's only touchdown on a one-yard-run in a 22-9 loss to the defense, Jenkins is enough of an optimist to think there is opportunity at running back with the Dolphins. He said, "I don't just look at it as those guys having a lock on the jobs. I feel like 1 can play somewhere, whether it's with the Miami Dolphins or somewhere else. Hut 1 am approaching it like it's a free enterprise system. If 1 felt like everything was inevitable, I would never have played the game.

"I'm just concerned about playing my best. With my capability, I feel I've grit a chance to play anywhere." Jenkins, a 6-foot-2, 210-pounder, describes himself as "tall, big and quick." He says he feels he has versatility going for him, after blocking a lot and playing both wide receiver and running back at Holy Cross. The Dolphins took him in the 1 1th round last year. He says that was about what he expected, since "I only played 18 games in college and I didn't have impressive statistics." He did tie an NCAA record with a 99-yard pass reception. "I think I was fighting the (Dolphins') system last year," Jenkins said.

"I didn't know it that well, so I wasn't relaxed. I'm a lot more relaxed now and I've got my feet under me. I'm not dancing, I'm moving up-field. And I think I've learned more in this preseason than all of last year." He settled for a big sigh of relief as a broad smile spread across his pale, usually expressionless face. "When you do something you believed you could never do again, it's got to be a great thrill," the 43-year-old veteran said after his victory in the St. Louis Children's Hospital Golf Classic yesterday. His final-round 68, two under par on the Norwood Hills Country Club course, nailed down his first triumph since cancer threatened not only his career but his life just 16 months ago. "A year ago I didn't know if I'd ever again be a tour player, let alone win a tournament," ittler said.

He had to make an eight-foot par putt on the final hole to hold off Australian Bruce Crampton, the season's leading money-winner who boosted his total to more than $240,000 with a second-place finish. Crampton had a final 97 for 269, one back of ittler's total. Littler, now 43, scored his last previous tour victory in the 1971 Colonial National Invitation. That was the 24th of a career that also includes a U. S.

Open triumph. But many thought it was his last when early last year he was diagnosed as having cancer of the lymph nodes. He underwent surgery under his left arm, the operation damaging muscles and nerves needed in his swing. But Littler, even now pale and drawn, started on a rehabilitation program swimming, welghtliftlng, exercises, eventually swinging a club. He rejoined the tour late last year and got into full stride again this season.

"I'd got In position to win a couple of times, which made me think I could do it but you never know until you win Littler said. It threw out half the eight-horse field of 2 years olds and made Love Reality 2-1, The Grok 5-2, Draft 3-1 and Golden Guinea 4-1. They finished 1-2-3-4, but not in that order. It was The Grok who proved to have the most heart, and new-found early speed. He took the lead after a sixteenth of a mile and turned back a continuing challenge from Love Reality to win by a length. Golden Guinea closed well along the rail to edge Lnve Reality by a nose for the place and Draft was fourth.

DEMARCO REPORTS: Bob DeMarco reported to the Cleveland Browns' training camp yesterday, ending his week-long holdout.

The veteran center, traded last summer by the Dolphins, reached agreement with Browns' owner Art Modell last week, and a club spokesman said he is expected to sign his contract today. DeMarco was the only veteran who failed to report as scheduled July 15. successfully against the group's highest hope, Marcel Clay, and added insult to injury with a second and more decisive victory in a rematch, thus making Clay a boxer with a 12-2 record. Curto, an 18-year-old transplanted Bostonian who fights as a light heavyweight, is 10-0. Contract conditions for his July 31 fight with Dennis Riggs call for a 170-pound limit.

Riggs makes his third Miami Beach appearance in as many months with a record of 28-13-2 since 1965. He weighed 162 in his last fight with Marcel Clay. Curto was 177 in his June 19 bout with Ohio boxer Casey Gacic. Veteran Arthur Ashe of Miami will meet young Jimmy Connors of Belleville, 111., tonight in the final for singles competition in the rain-delayed $60,000 U.S. Tennis Championships at Longwood. Ashe, the No.

2 seed in the tournament, gained the championship round yesterday when he eliminated Clark Graebner of New York City, 6-3 and 7-5. Connors, a 20-year-old former UCLA tennis player, advanced in yesterday's semi-finals by downing fifth-seeded Cliff Richey of Dallas, 6-0, 6-2. "Clark is one of the strongest players and can blow you off the court when he's playing well," Ashe said, "but against me, for some reason, he tries to press and tonight he made four errors, then I made winning shots. In their first set, Ashe broke Graebner's service in the seventh game after the New Yorker had survived three break points earlier. Davis is proving he can again Continued from IB weaken, the Orioles are getting hitting they have not seen in two years.

Accompanying Davis' surge have been outfielders AI Bumbry and Paul Blair, each hitting close to .300 and Rich Coggins, above .280. If Davis keeps hitting, it is not inconceivable he could become the tirst player to be batting champion in each league. New York's Ron Blomberg, the league leader, will probably not bat often enough to qualify, so Minnesota's Rod Carew, at .350, looks like the strongest contender for the title. "You think about it," Davis said. "1 was in a similar situation when I won my second batting title.

He's 30 points higher and I'd have to catch him, which would be hard because I started off so slow. Let's say if he falls off a little bit, and I can keep going, then I'll think about it a lot more." Davis' slow start was partly attributable to his use only against lefthanded pitching. Also, his wanderings have left him hitting with one eye over his shoulder. "I was up there a little anxious," he said. Since then, Davis has been hitting all kinds of pitching.

Yet he says he still can not feel secure. "I could be released tomorrow," he said. "That's the tory of my life." Despite a .324 season for Oakland two years ago, he antagonized management by helping Vida Blue in his contract dispute and was released before last season. It was not until well into last season that the Chicago Cubs ended his forced retirement. "I thought I'd be picked up right away," Davis said.

"I couldn't help thinking that people were telling other clubs things about me, that I was a clubhouse lawyer. I'm sure nobody in the Baltimore organization thinks of me as a troublemaker. But it could have been like that the rest of mv life." 1 -AWflV A The LAST SHOCK You'll Efer Buy Cftr DDCCCMT PADIH i uui iilijliv i unnia 95 16 HERE'S WHAT WE DO: A.
