SIGN OFF 2:30 A.M. 30AJjllkle When WIOD manager Bill Viands decided to turn his radio station into the sports voice of South Florida, some people (including me), scoffed. A few sports addicts, the kind who'd Woods stay up to watch roller derby at 3 a.m., cheered. But mostly what people did was complain about what a rotten deal this sports programming was for talk show host Sandy Payton. Lis-' teners fond of Sandy's intelligent kind of questioning and low-key style were perfectly willing to let others have all sports WIOD wanted to throw their way, but they got upset at what was happening to Payton in the process.

Some nights the talk show would begin at 10. On a bad night, when a baseball game went into extra innings, she might not get on the air until 11 or later. But the show always ended at 11:30. It was frequently a waste of her time, a test of guests' patience and a total frustration for listeners. Even talk-show competitors shook their heads at the absurdity of it all.

Beginning on Monday, Viands, who has become something of a hero to the sports fans of South Florida, is going to give Payton her due. "Sandy is too good to have what happened to her go on," he says now. She will take over a mid-day block of time on WIOD, in addition to keeping her music show on WAIA-FM. she will be on WIOD from 10 a.m. to noon with music and chit-chat, followed by a half-hour break for news and Paul Harvey.

Then she'll return at 12:30 for two hours of straight talk and interviews. Her WA1A music show will air from 7 p.m. to midnight. The 12:30 to 2:30 slot on WIOD is "permanent," as is the WA1A deal. The morning block may give way in a few weeks, if WIOD can work out a deal with someone Viands describes as "a major personality." I-' A -Wh.

Putting Payton on at mid-day "breaks the trend of everybody put ting their big guns on at night," he adds.

Losing out in this move is veteran South Florida personality George Means, who came over to WIOD from WWOK in the spring when Big Wilson quit and moved on to Channel 6's all- Payton night movie show. Viands and Means are talking to determine whether George will stay on Viands says he would like to find a place for him. Meantime, the changes make good sense for sports followers Now the nightly games baseball and soccer at the moment, football basketball and hockey to come will be surrounded by sports talk Hank Goldberg continues to handle the 7 p.m. sports gab fest. Sonny Hirsh has the post-game talk shows.

The games themselves are doing surprisingly well in the ratings. Al though there are wide disparities between the DadeBroward Arbi- tron survey and the Broward re port, the shows are a success, no matter which ratings book you read. In the combined MiamiFort Lau derdaleHollywood book, the 9 to 10 p.m. slot, which falls smack in the middle of most games, drew a 6.7 per cent share of the audience over-all, and a 10. 1 per cent share of men 18 and older.

In the survey for Broward alone, the slot drew 15.3 per cent of the listeners, with a 24.2 per cent share of men 18 and older. With more than 30 stations in South Florida carving up the audi ence, these numbers are impressive indeed. Warren, who served stints as program director and as station manager during his years at WGBS, sounded a bit nostalgic as he looked back on high points of the last 17 years. His proudest moment came in the public service area, when as honorary chairman of the Toys for Tots Christmas drive he convinced local industries to donate new toys for underprivileged kids, rather than used ones. He created Amos, a salty New England character, to share his mornings on the air, and even launched Amos on a political ca reer, taking him from his American Dream Party convention victory right on through the 1972 election WGBS general manager Dan Dl-Loreto says the parting with Warren has been entirely amiable.

"I think this will be good for him and, in the long run, I think it will be good for the station. We re get ting into a more adult contempo rary approach and I don think he felt entirely comfortable with that But he had been here a long time and I think he was worth the com promises." Program director Charlie Cook, the 1977 Billboard Personality of the Year when he was working on a West Virginia station, will occupy the morning slot while DiLoreto searches for a personality to replace Warren. "I'm after someone who can ere ate 'elevator DiLoreto said, explaining that he means the sort of personality people are still discuss ing as they ride the elevators to their offices in the morning. I have a very substantial budget and I'm after some very, very bright talent from outside the market who can raise the level of competition here. R.B., Toledo A.

Warren, who Warren will be doing commercials, technical films and the like on a full-time basis, says there was nothing left for him to prove in radio: "I've been No.l in town and I've beaten the people I wanted to beat.

There were no more challenges." He has also had his fill of getting up at 4 a.m. for 17 years, first at WKAT and then, since 1966, at WGBS. Warren got into radio through an employment agency, simply to earn enough money to "keep body and soul together." The marriage turned out to be ideal for the man who loved acting but had expected to spend his life teaching' English. Now, with commercials, he's still getting his chance to act. "Each commercial is a little piay of 30 seconds," he says.

They are also an ideal outgrowth of his years hosting shows, including "Bowling for Dollars" on Channel 10, where the arts of interviewing and gentle persuasion were combined. Interviews with terrified contestants were a real test of his skills, he recalls. "And you had to keep each one there for three minutes, or else you had to keep the next one out there for six."
