ROLLENE SAAL The Miami News Alaska Woman Tells Story: Sec Wilma Knox 0 Junior Help Juveniles: Read Connie Gee Museum Offers 18A Miami, Wednesday, April 1, 1964 If A Whole New 4 if4 Education CaJJj Swinging Styles For Easy Life It's spring and supposedly we're all as restless as those willows in a windstorm. And aren't youngsters more restless than anyone? Not that I'm implying that you have to be a mass of jitters to enjoy the Museum of Science and Natural History's spring schedule, but it's a good way to channel excess energy. The courses, which begin April 4, are marvelous. Though some 30,000 Dade school children last year visited the Museum's exhibits, I can't stress strongly enough the good work the Museum does. It's true that many distinguished scientists physicists, botanists, marine biologists followed their career from childhood.

This puts it squarely up to a parent to foster a child's interest, to recognize a talent, and to encourage areas of expression. One of the most popular Saturday classes is soberly called Nature Study I and II (I is for the 6-9-year-old group; II for youngsters 10-16). That title gives no idea of the variety of experience and fun children have by going out into the field, to dune and hammocks and forests where, under expert guidance they collect plants, insects, and marine life. Then they return to the laboratory where they classify their specimens, like the proper scientists they are. Another great favorite is "Reptiles and Amphibians." The children collect a gay assortment I But the woman who likes to keep one, step ahead in fashion and is not afraid of a few stares will find that Van Raalte has come out with the palest of stockings in "Gardenia" and Hanes also is producing white shades.

To put the final stamp of approval on this look, one noted fashion writer says, "Neutral shades are about as sexy as prunes. There are only two kinds of exciting stockings these days, black or white." Once upon a time (about a week ago) a young man named Buddy Logue waxed so enthusiastically about a dress manufacturing firm, Poise 'N Ivy, that we took him to be the owner. Well, Buddy is definitely a hard-working member of the company, but it seems that the real head of Poise 'N Ivy is Seth M. Roland. Pardon us for the mistake.

Husbands who confidently scoffed at those deep-plunging Paris originals this spring because they knew their wives could not afford them should be on guard. Line-for-line copies of the bosom-baring Diors and similarly-shaped gowns are al-already being offered in America at prices within range of almost any pocketbook. For example, a copy of the dress that started it all this spring, a black cocktail gown by Marc Bohan of Dior that plunges its neckline nearly to the waist, can be had for less than $70. And older husbands may be even more surprised at the fact that not only young women, but matrons in their 50's (with good shoulders and chests) are lapping up those revealing silhouettes with relish. By PAULA BREIBART Miami Newi ruhloa Editor Summer is for relaxing.

And clothing manufacturers have taken this idea to heart. Seersuckers, sharkskins, linens and denims are being done up in the most casual care-free and even kookiest leisure-time styles ever. Muu muus tn never-iron seersucker find themselves complete with hobo head-kerchiefs. Cotton blends go oriental la exotic at-home sets that belie their washabillty. Denim stretches with ease into not only pants but wrap-around skirts, beach jackets and shifts.

Furthermore, all-over patches of madras for skirts and pants put the old rags-to-riches story in reverse. And seersucker, newly light and wrinkle-shy in acetate and cotton, unfurls its usually nondescript stripes to gigantic proportions. Burnoose-y shifts and A-lines with hair-hiding hoods take the place of beach coats. And more versatile than the strictly-for-seaside coverups, these shifts can go marketing or spend a casual day inland equally as well. Nurses had better make a quick run on white stockings, because they may be scarce this summer.

Fashion experts, in New York at least, are pushing frosty nylons for the average woman to wear with summer costumes. Not that many hosiery manufacturers are nurturing this white-stocking craze; they're still in love with the neutral and dark tones. And many a salesgirl will look down her nose at the white-nylon customer with the comment, "They're just for nurses." of newts, frogs, salamanders and other creepy, crawly things, all of which children love until they unfortunately become squeamish grown-ups. Some future archeologist may go on his first "dig" right along the Tamiami Trail. The "Indians of South Florida" class, 9-14-year-olders, work for the entire 8 week course on a specific mound where they unearth actual pottery shards and shell implements.

There are many other courses for as well as for children in ceramics, jewelry, astron-Jomy, painting. Though this is good for grown-ups there's something especially valuable about this kind of activity for a child. Not every youngster, Heaven knows, is going to be a scientist, but no matter what occupa-- tion he follows, he is first of all a human being. To a child the world is a dazzling place, bright, colorfully detailed, new. By directing a child's interest a parent can preserve that special awareness of the world around him.

It's a lovely gift to give any child. Select your new STRIPES RUN both ways in this burnoose shift for beach or patio. In acetate surrah, it's about $14.
