Then there's technology, which is creating realistic new words because ot the new way we live in the computer age.

WITH THE coming of new ways of doing things, meanings of old xvurds change. One common old word ihat needs changing in our modern society is ACCIDENT. I'm talking about automobile accidents. Everybody knows thai most accidents aren't really at all. They're caused by drinking, speeding, tailgating.

poking along, lane hopping, i i foolhardiness, indolence and just plain old a i carelessness. Accidents are not nmdents when driving is harum scaruni. wild, wreckless. devil may -care, impetuous, hotheaded, hasty, hurried, mad. desperate, furious, breakneck, foolhardy, hairbrained, daredevil and death defying.

Add some of your own words. We still think of accidents as being something unavoidable. Thai's sheer hog wash. Our behind the times dictionaries define accidents in terms of something that's unexpected and unintentional, something that occurs purely by chance. NUTS.

may claim that accidents are unintentional, but how can we honestly say that when we drive like we drive' 1 It we're honest about it, we could say a great many of our accidents are premeditated. When we drive like we're just asking for an accident, that's premeditation in a real sense. Even intentional. Nobody's going to argue that only one parly i often the cause of an accident involving two ur more vehicles. But that still makes accidents causeable.

And ail too often lou many of us picture ourselves as being the innocent party, to which something happens by pure chance. We are blameworthy to a real extent when we could but don't prevent an acciden' for failure to drive defensively. We need a new word to replace "accident. The new word should be descriptive, of course, something that immediately conjuries up an image of torn up automobiles, of injury MAYBE IT shouldn't he a word that places blame, per but it ought to remove old fashioned notions that accidents occur bv chance or from unknown We've got the navy blue, to be exact. There are words we now use inlerchangably with accident that do a fair job of accomplishing this goal, words like wreck. crash, collision, crack up.
