THE TIP OFF: Pier and bridge fishermen both locally and in the Keys have experienced upswing in mackerel fishing. Skiff anglers in south bay making catches of from dozen to dozen and a half of good sized mackerel. THE SUNNY ISLES Fishin- Tier at Collins Ave. and 167th Street, Miami Beach, is open to anglers day and night, with bait and tackle, sales and rentals.

By BILL MOESER Outdoors Editor of The Mlsmi News Slightly cooler weather and continued breezes combine to make the fishing picture across South Florida slightly spotty but with many bright spots. The best fishing since the first of the year was experienced by pier fishermen locally. At Sunny Isles Fishing Pier mackerel and kings livened up the proceedings the past few days. Charley Sulzberger said the mackerel run good size to six pounds and yesterday 18 kings to 28 pounds were caught by live bait fishermen. Action from mackerel on Keys bridges particularly in the Marathon area increased slightly also.

Skiff anglers in the south Biscayne Bay area reported catches of from a dozen to dozen and a half of good sized mackerel. In Islamorada Capt. George Hommell Jr. reported tarpon moving onto the Florida Bay flats with plenty of bonefish still available. On the west coast snook fishing is still spotty with an occasional big fish to brighten the day.

Elgin White reported two days of snook fishing netted one fish for his party, but that one was a 20-pounder. Ladyfish and trout are the main items of interest currently on the west coast with scattered tarpon also. C. B. Schaefer, winter visitor from Baltimore, scored an unusual catch when he successfully boated a 400-pound green turtle on rod and reel while fishing with Capt.

Frank Filer aboard the "Blue Marlin." Blue water skippers off Islamorada also report the presence of a good number of dolphin. AT Sunny Isles Most of the nation's boardwalks conservatively follow the contour of the shoreline. At Sunny Isles, however, the pier ventures boldly some 920 feet into the Atlantic Ocean. To the fishermen, this is of particular importance in that the pier crosses over a natural channel frequented throughout the year with hundreds of varieties of fish. In these waters that range in depths to twenty-two feet is found the finest surf and deep sea fishing in Florida.

Sportsmen from all over the world come to the famous pier to enjoy the thrills of catching snook, tarpon, kingfish. bluefish, pompano, jack, mackerel, snapper and dozens of varieties of pan fish. In the evenings many record barracuda and sharks are also taken. The Sunny Isles Pier is ideal for vacationers that have not come with their own equipment for Florida fishing. A complete selection of bait and tackle is available for sale or rent.

Experts will aid you in the selection of the proper equipment. There is a complete line of nationally known rods, reels and lures. Charles Sulzberger, general manager of Sunny Isles has announced that there has been no price increase during the season. The same low rates prevail. For only 87 cents plus tax.

an angler can enjoy fishing all day. Children under 12 and spectators pay only 25 cents plus tax. In addition to the pier itself, the visitor will find a spacious 433 foot beach for daily picnicking. Try deep sea fishing this weekend without the pitch and roll of a boat. Visit the Sunny Isles Pier at Collins Avenue, on the ocean at 167th Street. Gordon Hoover, who won two years ago in a 27-foot Fiberglass Crystaliner, is expected back this year in a similar hull. Jimmy Wynn, bearded wizard of the waterways, will be mounted in a new 24-foot Bertram with a pair of his dependable Volvo-Penta units for power. Wynn was second last year.
